Arizona's Second-Half Collapse Hands BYU Big 12 Opener Win
One good half wasn't enough for Arizona on the road against a ranked opponent. The Wildcats were thoroughly dominated by No. 15 BYU after halftime on Saturday, falling 28-17 at LaVell Edwards Stadium in the Big 12 Conference opener for both teams. It marked Arizona's sixth consecutive loss to the Cougars and third in as many seasons since joining the Big 12.
The Wildcats (1-1, 0-1) were shut out in the second half and outgained by 146 yards after holding a sizable yardage and time-of-possession advantage before halftime. They led 17-14 but punted on three of four possessions after the break, including one where they passed on a long field goal attempt while down four, and also turned it over on downs in the red zone.
Second-Half Struggles Define the Game
Arizona ran only 20 plays in the second half after 42 in the first half, including 26 in the opening quarter. BYU held the ball for nearly 18 minutes after halftime, wearing down the Wildcat defense with a ground attack led by LJ Martin, who rushed for 98 yards.
The Cougars (2-0, 1-0) opened the second half with a 35-yard rushing drive, taking a 21-17 lead on a 6-yard touchdown catch by Kyler Kasper. From there, Arizona's offense stalled repeatedly.
Quarterback Noah Fifita finished 23 of 31 for 230 yards with a touchdown and an interception, adding 38 yards and a score on 11 carries. Kedrick Reescano ran for 49 yards on 15 carries, and Gio Richardson had five catches for 48 yards before leaving with an injury that changed the offense's rhythm.
Key Moments That Shifted Momentum
Arizona's first drive was nearly perfect, with Fifita completing six of seven passes for 52 yards and capping the 12-play possession with an 11-yard touchdown run. But critical mistakes followed.
A hold on Matthew Lado negated a long Reescano run, then on third-and-long Fifita was intercepted by Cade Uluave, who returned it to the 9-yard line. Two plays later, BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier scored on a 6-yard run to tie the game.
Michael Salgado-Medina connected on a 37-yard field goal to put Arizona back up late in the first quarter. BYU then took a 14-10 lead on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Bachmeier to Reggie Frischknecht early in the second.
After Arizona forced a three-and-out late in the first half, aided by a Leroy Palu sack, the Wildcats went back up 17-14 on a 16-yard touchdown catch by Southern Miss transfer Shane King with 2:03 remaining.
Fourth-Quarter Gamble Backfires
The Wildcats forced a punt and marched into BYU territory midway through the fourth quarter thanks to a long reception by Cole Rusk. Facing fourth-and-4, Arizona went for it. Rodney Gallagher III's catch was initially ruled a conversion, but replay overturned it, and BYU took over at its own 17 with 8:16 to go.
BYU capitalized on the turnover on downs, going up 27-17 with 6:10 left on a 12-yard Kasper touchdown catch, set up by a 61-yard reception by Legend Glasker over the Arizona secondary.
Fifita was sacked twice on a three-and-out on the ensuing possession, and BYU ran out the clock, taking a knee rather than adding a late score.
What's Next for Arizona
The Wildcats return home and to nonconference play on Sept. 19 against Northern Illinois. The Huskies, who moved from the Mid-American to the Mountain West this offseason, hosted FCS Illinois State on Saturday after losing 40-0 at Iowa in their opener.
Arizona will need to address its second-half stamina and offensive consistency if it hopes to bounce back against the Huskies before resuming Big 12 play.
