Big 12 Parity Creates Golden Opportunity for Iowa State and Cyclone Fans
The Big 12 Conference is wide open in 2026, and that is excellent news for Iowa State football fans. With the league's top teams showing unexpected weaknesses and the Cyclones sitting at 2-1 with a narrow loss to rival Iowa, the path to the conference championship game has never looked more attainable.
No. 11 Texas Tech is 3-0 for the second straight season, but this year's start has been a grind compared to last year's dominant run to the College Football Playoff. The Red Raiders lost a school-record nine players to the NFL draft and struggled to put away opponents, barely escaping with a 28-26 win over Houston in their Big 12 opener.
That kind of vulnerability, combined with a league where six teams are tied atop the standings at 3-0, signals a season of unprecedented parity. For Iowa State, which has a pair of lopsided wins sandwiched around a three-point loss to No. 17 Iowa, the opportunity is clear.
Iowa State Faces Its First Big Test Saturday
The Cyclones host No. 15 Utah on Saturday in what will be the Utes' first real challenge of the season. Utah swept its nonconference schedule by outscoring opponents 142-24, but did so against Idaho, Arkansas, and Utah State, none of which are currently ranked.
Iowa State's defense has been stout in its two wins, and the Cyclones proved they can compete with a top-20 team in the narrow loss to the Hawkeyes. A win over Utah would immediately vault Iowa State into the top tier of the Big 12 conversation and give the program its first marquee victory of the season.
Texas Tech's Rocky Start Shows the League Is Up for Grabs
Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire acknowledged the difference between this year's squad and last year's championship team.
We don't look the same, but we're 3-0, McGuire said.
The Red Raiders had trouble finishing drives against FCS opponent Abilene Christian, trailed on the road at Oregon State before rallying, and gave up a touchdown in the final minute against Houston before stopping a potential tying 2-point conversion.
Defensive tackle A.J. Holmes said the team is still improving despite the rocky start.
Just because you had an awesome season last year, that's supposed to be the same, but we're still working and getting better every day, Holmes said. So just because it's starting off a little rocky, don't mean it's going to end that way.
BYU and Kansas State Look Strong, But Not Invincible
No. 9 BYU has been the league's most consistent team, thanks to a stingy defense and the running of LJ Martin, who is averaging 109.3 yards per game with three touchdowns. Quarterback Bear Bachmeier has thrown for 642 yards and six scores with just one interception.
Kansas State (3-0) opened with two convincing wins but struggled to shake Tulane in a 31-20 victory last week. The Wildcats face another undefeated team Saturday in Cincinnati, which rallied from a 21-point halftime deficit to beat Miami (Ohio) 35-31.
West Virginia Is a Team to Watch
Coach Rich Rodriguez has the Mountaineers playing hard-nosed football in his second season. West Virginia is 3-0 for the first time since 2018 after beating then-No. 25 Virginia. They host Oklahoma State, which lost to Tulsa but pulled off the biggest upset of the season by knocking off then-No. 6 Oregon.
What Does This Mean for Iowa State?
The Big 12 hierarchy will shake out further this weekend with Colorado playing at Baylor and TCU visiting UCF. But the bottom line for Cyclone fans is this: the conference is there for the taking.
Texas Tech is beatable. Utah hasn't faced a real opponent. Kansas State showed cracks last week. And West Virginia, while improved, is still a year removed from a 4-8 season.
Iowa State has the defense, the home crowd, and the schedule to make a serious run. Saturday's game against Utah is the moment to prove it.
Kickoff is set for Saturday in Ames. Cyclone fans should expect a physical, low-scoring battle against a Utah team that has yet to be tested.
If Iowa State can pull off the win, the Cyclones will be right in the thick of the Big 12 race with a realistic path to Arlington and the conference championship game.
For a state that loves its football, this is the kind of season that makes Saturdays special.
