Caitlin Clark Delivers Record 'College GameDay' Ratings in Iowa City Return
Iowa's own Caitlin Clark proved once again that her star power extends far beyond the basketball court. The Indiana Fever guard's appearance on ESPN's College GameDay in Iowa City last Saturday drew a record 3.7 million viewers for the show's final hour, cementing what fans are calling the Caitlin Clark Effect.
The three-time WNBA All-Star joined the popular college football pregame show as the celebrity guest picker ahead of No. 14 Iowa's matchup with No. 5 Ohio State. It marked only the third time GameDay has visited Iowa City, and Clark made the most of the homecoming.
Record-Breaking Viewership Numbers
ESPN reported that the episode averaged 2.9 million viewers, making it the most-watched episode of the season and the most-watched October episode in the program's history. The network also noted that this season's average viewership is up 6% from 2025.
The final hour, which featured Clark joining the set alongside Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, Nick Saban, Pete Thamel, and Pat McAfee, pushed the audience even higher to 3.7 million viewers.
Fever beat reporter Scott Agness highlighted the number and connected it directly to Clark.

Fans and Analysts Take Notice
Journalist Corey Clayton pushed the comparison even further, noting that Clark's GameDay audience was more than double the combined viewership of the WNBA's semifinal TV games.
OutKick's Jon Root pointed out the timing of Clark's appearance, writing, The most watched College GameDay episode this season featured Caitlin Clark as the Celebrity Guest Picker. I'm sure that was just a coincidence, though.
Utah businesswoman Rachelle Morris put the number in historical context, noting the episode's status as the third highest-rated regular season show in program history.
One viewer admitted Clark was the reason they tuned in, writing, College GameDay on ESPN in Iowa with Caitlin Clark was the most watched October episode EVER. I can honestly say that was the first time I have personally ever watched it, and without question it was because of Caitlin Clark.
Clark's Picks Fall Short
Clark's predictions did not exactly go according to plan. She picked Iowa over Ohio State and Mississippi State over Alabama among her selections, ultimately finishing 5-5 for Week 5. But her prediction record was hardly the main story.
WNBA Playoff Impact
The numbers landed just days after Clark's WNBA season ended with Indiana's playoff loss to the Las Vegas Aces. Her exit was a blow to the league both in terms of viewership and fan experience.
Clark's pull during the Fever's brief 2026 playoff run was undeniable. ESPN recently reported that Fever-Aces Game 1 averaged 2.1 million viewers on ABC, making it the network's most-watched WNBA playoff game ever and up 122% from last season's first Game 1 on ABC.
Clark is no longer playing basketball this postseason, but her appearance on GameDay proves she remains a massive draw for any platform she touches.
