The Chicago Cubs made a roster move Tuesday before their game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, designating 7-year MLB veteran pitcher Jake Woodford for assignment. The decision has direct implications for the Cubs' Triple-A affiliate in Des Moines, Iowa.
Woodford, 29, had been shuttling between the major league club and Triple-A Iowa since signing with the Cubs in early July. His latest designation for assignment marks the second time in less than a month that Chicago has removed him from the 40-man roster.
What Happened With Jake Woodford?
The Cubs designated Woodford for assignment Tuesday to make room on the roster for trade acquisitions Tyrone Taylor and Ryan Zeferjahn. The team also optioned outfielder Kevin Alcantara to the minors.
Woodford had been with the Cubs on a minor league deal signed July 18, after he elected free agency following an earlier designation. Chicago selected his contract last Wednesday, but he appeared in only two games, allowing three earned runs on six hits over three innings.
In his brief stint with the Cubs this season, Woodford posted a 9.00 ERA with three strikeouts and no walks.
Woodford's Career and Iowa Connection
Woodford made his MLB debut in 2020 with the St. Louis Cardinals and has since bounced between several organizations. His best season came in 2022, when he posted a 2.23 ERA over 48 1/3 innings for St. Louis.
After being outrighted to Triple-A Iowa earlier this month, Woodford elected free agency before re-signing with the Cubs. The right-hander has struggled to find consistency since leaving the Cardinals, posting ERAs above 6.00 with the Chicago White Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Milwaukee Brewers over the past two seasons.
What This Means for Iowa Cubs Fans
For Iowa Cubs fans, Woodford's departure opens up a roster spot at Principal Park. The Cubs organization continues to shuffle arms through Des Moines as they evaluate talent for the stretch run.
Woodford's career MLB numbers include a 5.03 ERA with 142 strikeouts over 241 innings. He has appeared in 90 games, making 17 starts.
The Cubs face the Dodgers in the second game of a four-game series Tuesday night at Wrigley Field.
