Connor Zilisch Finds Hope at Iowa Speedway After Rookie Struggles in Cup Series
Iowa Speedway gave NASCAR rookie Connor Zilisch a much-needed boost after a difficult start to his Cup Series career. The 20-year-old Trackhouse Racing driver posted his best oval qualifying position and finished 11th in the Iowa Corn 350, offering a glimmer of hope amid a season plagued by bad luck and mechanical issues.
How did Zilisch perform at Iowa Speedway?
Zilisch qualified eighth, his best-ever starting spot on an oval. He earned stage points by finishing ninth in Stage 1 and 10th in Stage 2, then held on for an 11th-place finish. It was one of his strongest outings of the season, especially considering eight other drivers failed to finish the race due to crashes or mechanical failures.
“Yeah, it was a solid day. We got points in both stages. Made an adjustment to start the third stage,” Zilisch told Frontstretch after the race.
He credited crew chief Randall Burnett for a smart strategy call in the final stage. “Randall called a good race, caught us some spots back through strategy in the last stage, and finished 11th. Much-needed decent day. Wish it could have been a little better but we’ll take this right now,” Zilisch said.
What has gone wrong for Zilisch this season?
The rookie has endured eight DNFs in the first 23 races. A crash at Michigan ended his day after just eight laps. A late strategy call at the Chicago Street Race left him finishing 38th. These results have dented his confidence and reputation, especially as part-time driver Corey Heim has already won two Cup Series races this season.
“You don’t see guys like Denny Hamlin run outside the top 12 or Tyler Reddick or people who have been really good this year,” Zilisch said earlier this month. “Those guys are always inside the top 10 running well, but when you go from fifth on back, it’s just anybody can run well on any given week, and they don’t. That’s not a thing on Sundays.”
Can Trackhouse Racing improve on short tracks?
Zilisch’s strong run at Iowa came as NASCAR heads to Richmond and New Hampshire, both short tracks similar to Iowa. Trackhouse Racing showed improved speed there, with Ross Chastain leading 40 laps before finishing seventh. However, Shane van Gisbergen struggled with handling issues and finished 30th.
“We need to do a better job of working together to make sure all three cars can run well and be quick,” Zilisch said. “We had a solid day with Ross and I. I wish Shane could have had a little better day, with his spot on the cut line. It’s good that we’re at least bringing cars to the track that have some speed.”
What does this mean for the playoff picture?
Chastain sits 18th in the standings, 47 points below the playoff cut line. Van Gisbergen is 15th, with a 47-point cushion thanks to two road-course wins earlier this season. Zilisch is 34th and not in playoff contention, but strong runs at Richmond and New Hampshire could build momentum for 2027.
Iowa may prove to be a turning point. For a young driver learning the ropes at a struggling team, a clean race with stage points and a top-15 finish is a step in the right direction.
