Cubs Closer Palencia Hits IL Again, Iowa's Hollowell Called Up
Chicago Cubs closer Daniel Palencia is heading back to the injured list for the second time this season, this time with right elbow inflammation. The move comes just days after Palencia pitched through discomfort against the Colorado Rockies, and it raises fresh concerns about the lasting impact of his heavy workload in the World Baseball Classic. Right-hander Gavin Hollowell has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa to fill the roster spot.
What Happened to Daniel Palencia?
Cubs manager Craig Counsell noticed something was off with Palencia during Monday night's game against the Rockies. Palencia had already felt unwell after a Wednesday outing in Colorado, but he took the mound in the ninth inning anyway. After walking the first batter, he received a visit from the trainer and Counsell.
Palencia insisted he was fine and proceeded to strike out the next three hitters. However, his elbow did not respond well after the game, and symptoms persisted into Tuesday. The Cubs placed him on the 15-day injured list shortly after.
