Cubs Trade Deadline: Kevin Gausman Deal Boosts Rotation, Sends Pitcher to Iowa
The Chicago Cubs made a flurry of moves just before Monday's MLB trade deadline, headlined by a deal that brings veteran starting pitcher Kevin Gausman from the Toronto Blue Jays. The move addresses a critical need for a healthy arm in the rotation, and it also sends a pitcher to the Cubs' Triple-A affiliate in Des Moines.
Gausman fills a big need for the Cubs
The Cubs acquired Gausman, 35, in exchange for prospects Brett Bateman and Ty Southisene. Gausman's ERA sits at 4.38 this season, but his Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) of 3.51 is nearly identical to his 2025 mark of 3.41, suggesting he has been better than his ERA indicates. For a Cubs rotation battered by injuries, Gausman provides a reliable starter for the final two months of the regular season.
“He fills a significant need for the next eight weeks — a healthy starting pitcher,” said Cubs analyst John Damon. “There have been so many injuries to the rotation that it's a credit to the staff that they've done as well as they have.”
The trade is a rental, with Gausman set to become a free agent after the season. The Cubs gave up two decent prospects who profile as bench players, making this a reasonable cost for a short-term upgrade.
Jameson Taillon heads to Toronto
In a separate deal, the Cubs sent right-hander Jameson Taillon and cash considerations to the Blue Jays for a player to be named later and cash. Taillon was designated for assignment last week, and the Cubs managed to get something in return, which Damon called a “good deal.” The cash likely helps offset the money the Cubs are taking on for Gausman.
Braxton Garrett optioned to Triple-A Iowa
The Cubs also acquired left-hander Braxton Garrett from the Miami Marlins for prospects Jonathon Long and Jace Beck. Garrett, who underwent Tommy John surgery and missed all of 2025, has made two starts this season with a 14.54 ERA. He has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa in Des Moines.
“Most likely this is a deal looking to 2027,” Damon said. “If Garrett throws well in 2027, this is a win, but we don't know yet.”
Long, blocked at first base and designated hitter with the Cubs, will get a chance to play in Miami. Beck, 26, split this season between Double-A Knoxville and Triple-A Iowa with middling results.
Clay Holmes and Tyrone Taylor join from Mets
Finally, the Cubs acquired right-handed reliever Clay Holmes and outfielder Tyrone Taylor from the New York Mets for infield prospect Jefferson Rojas, the Cubs' No. 2 prospect. Holmes is recovering from a fractured fibula and could be ready soon. Taylor is expected to replace Justin Dean on the roster as a capable fourth outfielder.
Overall, Damon gave the Cubs' deadline moves a solid B grade. The team's World Series odds increased after the Gausman deal, according to reports.
For Iowa Cubs fans, the Garrett move means a new arm to watch in Des Moines, while the major league club looks to make a playoff push.
