Farm Crisis Threatens GOP's Iowa Stronghold Ahead of Midterms
Iowa farmers who powered Donald Trump to a commanding victory in 2024 are now facing their worst financial downturn in decades, and the fallout is threatening Republican control of Congress in this year's midterm elections. With agricultural distress spreading across the Farm Belt, Democrats are eyeing pickup opportunities in Iowa and neighboring states that could flip both chambers.
Trump won 69 percent of rural voters nationally in 2024, according to Pew Research, while farming-dependent counties in the Corn Belt backed him by an average of 78 percent, according to Investigate Midwest. But those same voters now say his trade war with Canada and the conflict with Iran have sent costs soaring and piled on uncertainty.
What's Driving the Farm Economy Crisis?
The shooting war with Iran has boosted diesel fuel and fertilizer prices, hitting farmers directly in their bottom line. Meanwhile, the latest trade war with Canada has made trade-dependent voters near the northern border deeply nervous about their markets.
Compounding the problem, the Trump administration's recent decision to temporarily pause tariffs on foreign beef has alarmed senior Republicans who warn that flooding stores with imports will undercut American producers. The president announced the U.S. will import up to 300,000 metric tons of foreign beef without charging higher tariffs in a bid to bring down grocery prices.
Iowa 3rd District Now a Democratic Pickup Opportunity
Silver Bulletin's midterm forecast identifies the Midwest as a veritable treasure trove for Democrats, with 10 of the 12 competitive Midwest House seats representing Democratic pickup opportunities. The model says Democrats are likely to take Iowa's 3rd District and almost certain to pick up Nebraska's 2nd District.
Many of these races are in red-leaning districts where the national environment may simply be too strong for Republicans to overcome. The forecast gives Democrats a 65 percent chance of winning Wisconsin's 3rd District, which Trump carried by 4.5 points in 2024, and sees similar dynamics in even redder districts like Michigan's 4th.
Senate Races in Farm Country Look Competitive
The Senate landscape is equally troubling for Republicans. The Cook Political Report rates the Iowa Senate race, currently held by Republican Chuck Grassley, as a toss-up. Races in Ohio, Alaska, and Texas are also rated competitive.
