Ferentz: No Panic Over Hawkeyes' Ground Game, QB Question Lingers

Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz addressed lingering questions about his quarterback situation and the running game during his weekly press conference on Sept. 15, offering a mix of confidence and cautious ambiguity ahead of Saturday's matchup against Northern Iowa.

The Hawkeyes (2-0) enter the non-conference finale as heavy favorites, but Ferentz's answers left the door open for continued competition under center and signaled no alarm over a ground attack that stalled against Iowa State.

Who Starts at Quarterback for Iowa Against UNI?

When asked directly if Hank Brown is the starting quarterback, Ferentz said Brown would likely start against Northern Iowa (3 p.m., FS1). But he stopped short of committing to Brown for the full game, noting that no final decision has been made about how the position will be handled.

Brown took the bulk of the first-team reps in practice, but Jeremy Hecklinski saw action in the season opener against Northern Illinois. Ferentz said both players have the coaching staff's confidence.

We really haven't had a conversation about how we're going to handle it yet, but I think just broad-based, I'd say this: We will have that conversation, Ferentz said. I think we all have confidence that both of them are good players right now.

Is the Running Game a Concern After the Iowa State Game?

Iowa rushed for nearly 300 yards against Northern Illinois but managed just 93 yards against a physical Iowa State defensive front. With Big Ten play beginning Sept. 26 at Michigan, some fans have questioned whether the ground game can hold up in conference matchups.

Ferentz credited Iowa State for its defensive performance and expressed confidence that the offense can adapt if teams sell out to stop the run. Brown completed 70 percent of his passes for nearly 200 yards in the Cy-Hawk win.

Then again, if people are going to truly shut off the run, that's where we've got to be able to answer with something, counter it and have some answers there, and I thought we found ways to do that on Saturday as well, Ferentz said.

Should FBS Teams Play FCS Opponents in Today's College Football?

Longtime Iowa reporter Scott Dochterman raised the question of whether it is fair for a strong FBS program to face a rebuilding FCS team like Northern Iowa, which has struggled with roster retention in the transfer portal era.

Ferentz pushed back on the premise, recalling Iowa's near-loss to the Panthers in 2009. He also praised second-year UNI coach Todd Stepsis, calling him a really good football coach.

You have to go in to every game with the right attitude and right respect for your opponent and what it takes to be successful, and I think that'll never change, Ferentz said.

Injury Updates: Who Is Out or Questionable for the Hawkeyes?

The physical Iowa State game added new names to Iowa's injury report. Tight end DJ Vonnahme is unlikely to play Saturday after suffering an injury against the Cyclones, while running back Kamari Moulton is day-to-day after leaving the game in the fourth quarter.

Defensive back Tyler Brown and running back L.J. Phillips, both of whom have been sidelined, are making progress but are unlikely to play against Northern Iowa. Ferentz did not rule out Phillips returning for the Big Ten opener at Michigan.

Brown, a transfer from James Madison, has been working through a lingering injury that hampered him during fall camp. Ferentz said Brown is beginning to get some practice work in.
