Former Iowa Cubs Star Christian Franklin Shines in MLB Debut with Orioles
Iowa baseball fans have a new reason to cheer for the Baltimore Orioles. Christian Franklin, a former standout for the Triple-A Iowa Cubs, made a memorable Major League Baseball debut Tuesday night, becoming just the second player in Orioles history to record a walk, a run and a stolen base in his first game.
Franklin, 26, was traded from the Washington Nationals to Baltimore just before Monday's trade deadline. The move came one day after the Nationals acquired him from the Chicago Cubs organization, where he spent four seasons climbing the minor league ranks, including a stint in Des Moines.
From Iowa to the Big Leagues
Franklin reached Triple-A Iowa in 2025 after being drafted by the Cubs in the fourth round out of the University of Arkansas in 2021. His path to the majors was delayed by a torn patellar tendon in his left knee that sidelined him for the entire 2022 season.
Despite the setback, Franklin kept pushing. He was dealt to the Nationals at the 2025 trade deadline and started the 2026 season at Triple-A Rochester, where he hit .249 with 17 doubles, six home runs, 39 RBIs and 17 stolen bases in 93 games.
“I knew that it would happen eventually,” Franklin said of reaching the big leagues. “I’m just grateful that it happened when it did.”
Instant Impact in Baltimore
In his debut against the Angels at Camden Yards, Franklin drew a walk, scored a run and swiped a base. The only other Oriole to accomplish that feat in a debut was Luis Matos in 2000.
Orioles manager Craig Albernaz praised Franklin’s composure. “I was really impressed with Frankie, the way he navigated the at-bats. The moment wasn’t too big for him. He was under control,” Albernaz said. “There are a lot of things to like about Christian, and the clubhouse was really excited for him.”
Franklin said the standing ovation from Baltimore fans caught him off guard. “Super cool,” he said. “It’s been nothing but love. I’m extremely just grateful and in awe of the companionship and just friendship in MLB baseball.”
Playing Time Ahead
With the Orioles trading Taylor Ward to the Seattle Mariners on Monday, Franklin has a clear path to regular playing time. He started in center field and batted leadoff Wednesday night against Angels left-hander Reid Detmers, becoming the first Oriole to hit leadoff within his first two games since Xavier Avery in 2012.
Franklin is focused on helping Baltimore, which entered Wednesday at 55-58, make a postseason push in a crowded American League Wild Card race.
“I’m not pressing to do it any certain way or fashion. It’s just whatever the game presents,” Franklin said. “If it’s a pinch-hit opportunity, if it’s getting a bunt down, if it’s defensive replacement, if it’s starting in the outfield, it doesn’t matter to me. I’m just happy to get an opportunity.”
Why This Matters for Iowa
Franklin’s success is a testament to the development pipeline that runs through Des Moines. The Iowa Cubs have produced numerous big leaguers over the years, and Franklin’s story shows that hard work and perseverance can pay off, even after a major injury.
For Iowa baseball fans, Franklin is a name to watch as he gets more playing time in Baltimore. His journey from the Iowa Cubs to the Orioles is a reminder that the path to the majors often runs through the Heartland.
