Grand View Christian Stuns Hinton in Iowa Softball State Thriller
FORT DODGE, Iowa — Grand View Christian (GVC) delivered a clutch performance at the Iowa high school softball state tournament on July 21, fending off a determined Hinton squad with a 7-4 victory to keep their championship hopes alive.
In a double-elimination showdown, the Thunder showed resilience after Hinton erased a 4-0 deficit. The game turned in the bottom of the fifth inning when freshman Sophie Bird crushed a go-ahead home run to dead center field, reigniting the GVC dugout and putting the team back on top.
Freshman Heroics Steal the Spotlight
Bird's blast came at a critical moment, silencing Hinton's momentum and showcasing the depth of talent on this young GVC team. 'It's unbelievable,' Bird said. 'This team is so good. We all believe in the mission of we over me.'
She credited her teammates for the confidence boost. 'It was just all my teammates believing in me and telling me I could do it,' Bird added. 'Them having faith in me gave me so much confidence. I just felt so free to play.'
Eighth-Grader Delivers in the Circle
With the lead restored, Thunder coach Krista DeMeulenaere turned to eighth-grader Eperlie Weitzel to close the game. Weitzel, playing in her first state tournament, showed remarkable poise under pressure. She hit the first batter she faced but quickly rebounded, striking out Chanley Boeve and retiring the next two batters on a ground out and fly out.
'It was just exciting coming up for my team,' Weitzel said. 'Not just doing it for me, but for everyone else.'
Weitzel allowed just one hit, struck out three, and walked none to earn the win. She closed the game by working around a two-out double from Hinton's Sydney Doeschot, striking out Kayla Kovarna for the final out.
Insurance Runs Seal the Win
GVC added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Livy VanDerSluis reached base for the fourth consecutive time and later scored on a ground out by Bird. The Thunder also benefited from a wild pitch to pad the lead.
Starter Chloe Cox pitched five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and no walks. VanDerSluis went 4-for-4 with one run scored, and Grace Kruse hit a big two-run homer in the second inning to give GVC an early advantage.
Hinton's Season Ends in Heartbreak
Hinton finished its season with a 26-5 record. Caitlin Badar took the loss, giving up seven runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and four walks over six innings. Kovarna was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Addison Dunkel and Doeschot each had two hits for the Blackhawks.
GVC, now 28-4, advances to the next round of the double-elimination tournament. The Thunder will look to continue their run with the same grit and determination that carried them through this nail-biter.
For Iowa softball fans, this game was a reminder of the heart and talent on display at the state tournament. GVC's blend of young stars and veteran leadership makes them a team to watch as they fight for a championship.
