And then you know to see them do what they did in the playoff, that just that's not happened in the CFP. The way they've dominated teams is just really impressive.”

Indiana went from a middling program to a national championship contender under Cignetti, a feat that Bielema said even surpasses the legendary turnaround he witnessed firsthand at Kansas State under Bill Snyder.

Bielema recalled his time as an assistant at Kansas State under Snyder, who took over a program that went 3-40-1 in the four years before his arrival and started 0-11 in his first season. That team eventually became a national powerhouse.

“I was at Kansas State with Bill Snyder, and I remember they were about as bad as bad gets when he took over,” Bielema said. “Sports Illustrated wanted to come in and do an article about how bad it was there, and he said, 'I'll let you write the article, but when we turn this thing, you got to come back and write a story about it.' So there's a framed Sports Illustrated article on Coach's office when I was working for him that said the greatest turnaround in college football history, and I think Indiana probably passed that one by.”

Bielema's comparison is striking. Snyder's Wildcats went 3-51-1 in their worst stretch before his tenure. Indiana, while not as historically bad, had been a perennial underachiever under previous coach Tom Allen. Cignetti turned the Hoosiers into a playoff team in just two seasons.
