Iowa Air Quality Alerts: Wildfire Smoke and Ozone Threaten Health Across the State
Iowa is under air quality alerts as smoke from Canadian wildfires and summer ozone pollution combine to create potentially unhealthy conditions for residents across the state. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for several Iowa counties, with monitors near Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Clinton, Davenport, and Muscatine reporting fine particulate matter (PM2.5) levels considered unhealthy by the Environmental Protection Agency.
This is not a distant problem. The smoke drifting south from Canada, along with regional wildfires and stagnant summer air, is directly impacting Iowa families. The alerts, issued around July 19 and July 20, 2026, are part of a broader pattern affecting at least 13 states, including neighboring Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Missouri.
Where in Iowa Is the Air Quality Worst?
Iowa officials have specifically warned that PM2.5 levels in eastern Iowa are reaching unhealthy thresholds. The affected areas include Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Clinton, Davenport, and Muscatine. These are communities where many Iowans work outdoors, farm, or enjoy summer recreation.
In Minnesota, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency said heavy smoke had expanded into east-central and south-central Minnesota, with the Air Quality Index expected to reach the 'Red,' or 'Unhealthy,' category. Wisconsin was under a statewide advisory, with PM2.5 expected to reach 'Unhealthy' to 'Very Unhealthy' levels in some areas. Illinois alerts cited smoke, particulates, and ozone levels forecast at or above the 'Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups' category.
Why Is the Air Quality So Bad Right Now?
The poor air quality is being driven by a combination of factors. Smoke from Canadian wildfires is drifting south into the Midwest and Northeast. At the same time, hot, stagnant air is worsening ground-level ozone pollution, which forms when sunlight and heat react with pollutants from vehicles, industrial activity, and other sources. Light winds then prevent that pollution from dispersing, allowing ozone and fine particles to build up near the ground.
As of July 19, 2026, the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reported 40,560 wildfires in the U.S. so far this year, torching more than 3.8 million acres. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notes that large and catastrophic wildfires have increased in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, resulting in smoke frequently blanketing large portions of the country.
What Are the Health Risks for Iowans?
Wildfire smoke contains fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5, which are particles small enough to travel deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says that smoke can affect people even hundreds or thousands of miles from a fire.
The groups most at risk include children, older adults, pregnant people, outdoor workers, and people with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease, or other lung conditions. However, when AQI levels reach 'Unhealthy,' the general public may also experience symptoms.
Common short-term symptoms include coughing or wheezing, shortness of breath, burning eyes, nose, or throat, chest tightness, fatigue or dizziness, and palpitations or unusual heart symptoms.
Long-Term Health Risks Are Real
A 2026 study published in Science Advances estimated that long-term exposure to wildfire-smoke PM2.5 contributed to about 24,100 deaths per year in the lower 48 states between 2006 and 2020. The study found no evidence of a 'safe' exposure threshold.
A separate 2025 Stanford-led study estimated that wildfire smoke exposure caused about 41,380 excess deaths annually in the U.S. during 2011-2020. Researchers projected that smoke-related deaths could rise by more than 70 percent by 2050, with economic damage potentially reaching $608 billion per year.
Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health researchers also found that exposure to wildfire-smoke PM2.5 was associated with health effects for up to three months after exposure, including increased hospitalization risks for ischemic heart disease, stroke, arrhythmia, hypertension, pneumonia, COPD, and asthma.
Physical Activity Increases Exposure
Health officials advise reducing prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity during smoke events because heavier breathing means more particles enter the lungs. Research from the European Respiratory Society found that during exercise, people can inhale more than eight times as much air as they do at rest, increasing exposure during everyday activities like walking the dog, jogging, hiking, cycling, gardening, and playing outdoor sports.
The American Heart Association said studies have linked wildfire smoke to increased emergency-room visits for cardiovascular conditions, including a 42 percent rise in heart attack visits and a 22 percent rise in ischemic heart disease visits within a day of dense smoke exposure, especially among adults 65 and older.
What Iowans Can Do to Protect Themselves
Public health officials recommend checking AirNow.gov or local air quality forecasts before going outside. When smoke or ozone levels are high, people should consider staying indoors, keeping windows and doors closed, using air purifiers, and limiting outdoor exercise.
For those who must be outside, wearing an N95 mask can help reduce exposure to fine particles. Farmers and outdoor workers should take frequent breaks indoors and monitor symptoms closely.
