Iowa Barn Find: 1968 Cadillac DeVille With 23,566 Miles Roars Back to Life After 14 Years

An untouched 1968 Cadillac DeVille with just 23,566 miles on the odometer has been pulled from an Iowa barn and brought back to life after sitting idle for 14 years. The Vice Grip Garage team rescued the classic car, which came with a remarkable history, original documentation, and a preserved interior that looks frozen in time.

The big Cadillac had been stored since 2012, when it made its final trip to a wedding. Despite the dust and years of neglect, the car's condition impressed the revival team, and its story stretches back to a California teacher who bought it new and later gifted it to a family friend who moved to Iowa.

A Cadillac With A Remarkably Complete History

The DeVille was originally purchased in 1968 from Porto Motors in Watsonville, California, by a high school teacher identified as Miss Blanchard. She never married or had children, and over the years a man named John helped her with jobs around the house and occasionally drove her to appointments in the Cadillac.

After John moved his family to Iowa in 1983, the two stayed in touch. When he returned to California in 1993 to move a family member back to Iowa, Miss Blanchard reportedly told him to come and get your car, effectively gifting him the Cadillac he had long admired.

The car later appeared in parades and shows, but its final outing came on October 22, 2012, when it was used for a wedding. After that, it went into a pole barn and remained there until Vice Grip Garage acquired it.

23,566 Miles And An Interior Frozen In Time

The DeVille's odometer showed just 23,566 miles, and the rest of the car appeared consistent with very light use. The original-style interior remained unusually clean, with intact white seating, a crack-free dashboard, working power windows, courtesy lights, and even old maps and service paperwork still stored inside.

The trunk was equally impressive, as the original trim panels were in place, the jack was still present, and an old Michelin spare appeared to never have been used.

Under the hood sat Cadillac's 472-cubic-inch V8, rated when new at 375 horsepower and a substantial 525 lb-ft of torque. The engine bay was remarkably complete, with much of its original equipment still intact rather than modified or replaced over the years.

Waking The 472 V8 After 14 Years

Vice Grip Garage started cautiously, removing the spark plugs, inspecting the cylinders with a camera, and adding lubricant before turning the engine over. Some light surface rust was visible inside the cylinders, but nothing suggested catastrophic internal damage.

The ignition system was serviced, the coil tested healthy, and a fresh battery brought nearly every electrical feature back to life. Once fresh fuel was supplied, the Cadillac eventually fired, although an initially incorrect firing order caused some rough running before the mistake was corrected.

Old fuel became the next concern. The tank and lines contained heavily varnished gasoline, so the system was flushed repeatedly before fresh fuel was allowed to reach the carburetor.

Brakes, Tires, And Fluids Needed Attention

Fourteen years of sitting had taken a toll on the braking system even though the car itself remained exceptionally solid. Collapsed front brake hoses prevented fluid from reaching the wheel cylinders, forcing the team to replace rubber lines and service the brakes before attempting any meaningful road test.

The 1994-vintage tires were also far beyond sensible road use. They were replaced with new BFGoodrich radials featuring wide whitewalls, preserving the Cadillac's period appearance while giving it modern rubber underneath.

Fresh engine oil, a new filter, transmission fluid, a transmission filter and gasket, and chassis grease followed. The transmission pan reportedly showed remarkably little wear material, reinforcing the impression that this really is an unusually low-mileage example.

Back On The Highway

Once everything was buttoned up, the DeVille moved under its own power for the first time in years. It reportedly drove straight, shifted cleanly, stopped confidently, and even managed a highway trip at 70 to 75 mph.

Vice Grip Garage put roughly 140 to 150 miles on the Cadillac during its shakedown. A fuel-delivery issue appeared near the end of the journey, likely related to the tank pickup or remaining contamination, so the revival is not completely finished yet.

Even so, this is the kind of barn find enthusiasts hope still exists: largely original, exceptionally complete, documented, and preserved rather than restored into something unrecognizable. Vice Grip Garage is currently offering the Cadillac as part of a giveaway running through September 18, along with a matching camper and $15,000.
