Iowa Board of Education Approves Eighth Graders for High School Varsity Sports
OSKALOOSA, Iowa — The Iowa State Board of Education has approved emergency rule changes that will allow eighth graders to compete in high school varsity and junior varsity sports starting this fall. The move, aimed at boosting participation, gives local school districts the final say on implementation.
Previously, eighth graders could only play in summer sports like baseball and softball. Now, they can participate year-round at the varsity and JV level if their district opts in. The change is expected to have the biggest impact on smaller schools, where it could help fill rosters, but it also raises concerns about safety and the effect on middle school programs.
