Iowa Distance Runners Shine From Pella to Budapest This Weekend

Iowa-based distance runners and triathletes delivered standout performances across the state and around the globe this weekend, from Central College's cross country dominance in Grinnell to a Sioux City native competing at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest.

Central College's men's and women's cross country teams swept team titles at the 64th annual Les Duke Invite in Grinnell, while Des Moines runner Cody Baele claimed his second Capital Pursuit 10-mile title in three years. Meanwhile, seven-time NCAA champion Kassie Parker of Loras College took the women's title at the same event.

Central College Men Win Big at Les Duke Invite

The Dutch men nearly posted a perfect score, winning the team title with 16 points, just one shy of perfection. Senior Jack Brown of Norwalk took the individual 8K crown in 26:00.4, edging teammate William Wadsley by just four-tenths of a second. Freshman Isaac Rankin, a Knoxville product, finished third in 26:00.9.

Brown, the reigning NCAA indoor mile champion, led a Central sweep of the top three spots. Freshman Carter Nunn of Marshalltown claimed fourth in 26:19.6, while former Norwalk runner Donovan Card finished sixth in 26:29.9.

William Penn senior Andrew Miller, an All-American in the NAIA 3,000 steeplechase, took seventh in 26:41.4. The Pleasant Valley grad was followed by Central's James Brant of South Tama in 26:43.8 and Austin Vander Werf of Interstate 35 in 26:45.9.

Central Women Hold Off Grinnell for Team Title

The Dutch women won with 33 points, 13 ahead of host Grinnell. But the individual title went to 40-year-old Niki Borner of Indianola, a former Bethel (MN) standout competing for Runablaze Iowa. Borner cruised to victory in the 6K race in 22:32.7, a 6:02.8 pace per mile.

Central sophomore Maddy Stevens of Dallas Center-Grimes took runner-up in 23:01.5. Teammate Teah Miller of Iowa Falls-Alden finished third in 23:29.4. Simpson College freshman Ady Mason of Indianola placed ninth in 24:01.2.

Baele Wins Capital Pursuit 10-Mile for Second Time

Des Moines runner Cody Baele, 31, won the 44th annual Capital Pursuit 10-mile race at Easter Lake in 48:40.66. The Fitness Sports Distance Project athlete's time was just off his 2024 winning mark of 48:35.9, which ranks No. 2 in Iowa road racing history behind Phil Coppess' 1985 record of 48:03.

Baele has actually run faster than Coppess' mark, posting a personal-best 47:48 at the Cherry Blossom race in Washington, D.C., in April 2024. That race is ineligible for Iowa records because it was held out of state.

Baele won by more than 2:30 over Runablaze Iowa's Blake Whalen, 31, of Des Moines, who ran 51:22.60. Recent Wartburg College grad Jack Kinzer of Waverly took third in his Capital Pursuit debut in 51:32.87.

Parker Repeats as Women's Champion

Seven-time Loras College NCAA champion Kassie Parker, 27, grabbed the women's title for a second consecutive year. The Crown Running athlete and ex-Clayton (Guttenberg) prep finished in 59:07.54, just a few seconds off her winning effort of 59:00.39 from last year that ranked sixth best in Iowa history.

Lexi Brown, another ex-Wartburg runner who competed for New London in high school, took runner-up in the women's category in 1:00:08.10. The 25-year-old's performance moves her into the top 15 in Iowa history.

Recent Wartburg Grad Wins Four-Mile Race

Lance Sobaski of the Driftless squad won the four-mile race in 19:03.30, a 4:45 pace per mile. The Des Moines man, 22, was NCAA runner-up in the 3,000 steeplechase in May. The women's winner was Runablaze athlete Elise Wieland of Des Moines in 24:43.23.

Sioux City's Shelby Houlihan Competes in Budapest

Fourteen-time USATF national champion Shelby Houlihan, 33, competed in the women's 5,000 at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, Hungary, on Sept. 13. The Sioux City East grad and 2016 Olympian settled for 12th place in 15:18.65. Ethiopia's Likina Amebaw won in 14:30.36.

Dordt Hosts Fast Sunflower Open

The Dordt Sunflower Open in Sioux Center lived up to its reputation as a fast course. The host Defender women took the title of the five-team meet with just 20 points, 39 ahead of St. Mary (NE). Sophomore Addison Liston of Unity Christian set a new PR of 18:06.5 on the 5K course, finishing second behind teammate Joy Koole's 18:04.7.

The Dordt men took victory with a perfect 15 points, 38 ahead of Northwestern College. Former Dordt runner Jacob Vander Plaats of Fitness Sports Distance Project claimed the individual 6K title in 18:21.5.

Luther Freshman Wins All-American Race

Luther College true freshman Adam Gray of Cedar Rapids Kennedy won the men's four-mile All-American Race on Sept. 12 in 20:27.2. The Luther men won the team title with 32 points, six ahead of Iowa Central.

In the women's race, Runablaze's Flannery Cerbin-Bohach of rural Cresco settled for third in 19:26.9. Iowa Central freshman Zosia Zdobylak won the individual title in 18:23.9.

Iowa Athletes Make Impact Nationwide

Former Council Bluffs St. Albert runner Lili Denton continues to make an impact as a freshman for the University of Texas. Denton finished as the No. 2 athlete for the seventh-place Longhorns at the Texas A&M Invitational, running the 5K in 18:21.1.

Iowa City High grad Truman Thompson finished fifth for Montana in the 8K at the WSU Cougar Classic in 25:31.3. Former Southeast Polk prep Libby Hartz secured 25th place in the 5K in 19:55.7 for the Montana women.

Pleasant Valley grad Ani Wedemeyer and her Johns Hopkins squad competed against big schools at the Virginia Invitational, placing 47th in the 5K in 18:56.3. Truman State junior Clare Stahr of Gilbert led the Bulldogs to the team crown at the Larry Young Invitational, finishing fourth in 19:10.1.

Triathlon and Road Racing Roundup

Former Cedar Rapids Washington and Luther College athlete Carson Christen placed ninth overall at Ironman Wisconsin in Madison on Sept. 13. Christen covered the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run in 9:25:12.

Former Loras College standout Joey Schultz of Dubuque picked up second overall at the MVRA Benefit Classic half marathon in Dubuque in 1:11:52. Runablaze's Amanda Edwards, 38, of Dubuque won the women's crown in 1:29:26.

With cross country season in full swing and road racing continuing through the fall, Iowa's distance running community shows no signs of slowing down. From high school standouts making immediate college impacts to veteran masters runners posting impressive times, the state's running culture remains strong.
