Iowa Falls Short in Little League World Series as Ohio Advances to U.S. Final
Iowa's run at the Little League World Series came to an end Thursday with a 7-1 loss to Hamilton West Side of Ohio, who punched their ticket to the U.S. championship game on less than 12 hours of rest. The defeat marks the end of a memorable tournament for the Iowa squad, who battled through the elimination bracket before falling to one of the most storied programs in Little League history.
Ohio's quick turnaround proves too much for Iowa
After defeating Alabama 11-2 Wednesday night around 9:30 p.m., Ohio returned to the field for a weather-adjusted 9 a.m. first pitch against Iowa. The quick turnaround didn't slow down the Hamilton bats, which have been the most explosive in the entire tournament.
West Side scored four runs in the first inning, highlighted by Jack McAdams' RBI single and Bob Frazier's bases-loaded triple that drove in three more. Iowa managed to strand Frazier at third with two closing strikeouts, but the damage was already done.
Iowa's fifth-inning rally falls short
Iowa scored its lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning after getting runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. A fielder's choice at third base brought home the run, cutting the deficit to 5-1.
But Ohio answered immediately, adding two more runs in the top of the sixth on a Josiah Infante single that drove home two runs with the help of a fielding error. The insurance runs pushed the lead to 7-1, where it would stay.
Walker Osborne shuts down Iowa's offense
Ohio pitcher Walker Osborne delivered a complete-game performance, throwing 4.1 shutout innings before Iowa finally broke through. He finished with four strikeouts while allowing just four hits.
A historic program continues its dominance
Hamilton West Side is making its sixth trip to Williamsport, more than any other program worldwide, and has now matched its best-ever finish at the World Series. The Ohio squad dropped its opening game to Nevada in walk-off fashion 6-5, then won five straight elimination games to reach the U.S. finals.
“I've been in Little League for 43 years,” said Hamilton head coach Tim Nichting. “We've had some good teams and made it here six times, but this is just nuts.”
West Side's 44 runs scored make it the highest-scoring offense in the tournament. Nichting praised his team's resilience after the early loss.
“It's crazy what we've done so far,” Nichting said. “Even if we were to lose, it can't diminish what we've done.”
