Iowa Hawkeyes Are Just 12 Points Away From a Big Ten Title in 2026
Iowa City, IA – The Iowa Hawkeyes are closer to a Big Ten championship than most fans realize. Despite a 6-3 conference record in 2025, the team lost its three biggest games by a combined 12 points. That narrow margin has coach Kirk Ferentz and his squad believing a title run is within reach this season.
“We are knocking on the door,” Ferentz said after the season. “We are evolving, adapting, and getting closer every year.”
How Close Is Iowa to a Big Ten Title?
The math is simple. Iowa lost to Indiana 20-15, to Oregon 18-16, and to USC 26-21. Those three defeats came by a total of 12 points. Had any one of those games gone the other way, the Hawkeyes would have finished 9-0 in Big Ten play and punched a ticket to Indianapolis for the conference title game.
Against Indiana, Iowa tied the game at 13-13 late in the fourth quarter. Safety Zach Lutmer intercepted Fernando Mendoza to set up a potential go-ahead drive. But a missed field goal gave Indiana the ball back, and the Hoosiers scored a game-winning touchdown with 1:08 left.
Against Oregon, Iowa took a 16-15 lead with under two minutes to play after a 93-yard drive. But Oregon quarterback Dante Moore connected with Malik Benson on a deep pass through tight coverage, setting up a chip-shot field goal for the win.
Against USC, Iowa led 21-10 at halftime. But the Trojans scored 16 unanswered points in the second half to steal a 26-21 victory.
Why Iowa Is Built for a Run
Iowa’s formula is different from most top programs. The Hawkeyes continue to recruit and develop high school talent over three and four years, a model that many schools have abandoned in favor of heavy transfer portal reliance. But Iowa has also adapted, using the portal to fill specific needs.
Quarterback Mark Gronowski, receiver Jacob Gill, and linebacker Nick Jackson are recent examples of transfer additions who made immediate impacts. That blend of homegrown stars and smart portal pickups gives Iowa a unique edge.
“We develop our guys, but we’re not naive to the portal,” Ferentz said. “We find the right pieces to complement what we already have.”
What It Will Take to Win the Big Ten in 2026
Iowa’s schedule in 2026 includes home games against Ohio State and Michigan, plus road trips to Oregon and Penn State. Winning those matchups will require the same physical, disciplined football that has defined the program for years, plus a few more breaks.
The Hawkeyes return key players on both sides of the ball. The defense, a perennial strength, should again be among the best in the conference. The offense, led by Gronowski, has shown it can score when needed.
“We’re not there yet,” Ferentz admitted. “But we are going to keep knocking on the door. We are not afraid of anyone.”
Iowa Fans Should Be Optimistic
For a program that has not won a Big Ten title since 2004, the gap is shrinking. Twelve points is all that separates Iowa from a trip to Indianapolis. With a strong core returning and a schedule that offers opportunities, 2026 could be the year the Hawkeyes break through.
“We are close,” Ferentz said. “We just need to finish.”
