Iowa Hawkeyes Blast Northern Iowa 55-0 With Historic Ground Attack
IOWA CITY, Iowa — The No. 18 Iowa Hawkeyes delivered a dominant performance Saturday, crushing in-state rival Northern Iowa 55-0 behind a historic rushing performance that showcased the team's remarkable depth at running back.
Xavier Williams, Nathan McNeil, and Braeden Jackson each surpassed 100 yards rushing, marking the first time Iowa has achieved that feat since 1983. The Hawkeyes (3-0) piled up 422 yards on the ground and 640 yards of total offense, all without their leading rusher Kamari Moulton, who sat out with an injury.
Three Running Backs Make History for Iowa
Williams led the charge with 151 yards and three touchdowns on just six carries, including scoring runs of 48, 37, and 16 yards. McNeil added 111 yards and two scores, while Jackson celebrated his 20th birthday with 125 yards and a touchdown on the ground plus a 24-yard touchdown reception.
It was the first time Iowa had three players rush for over 100 yards in a single game since Owen Gill, Norm Granger, and Eddie Phillips accomplished the feat in a 61-10 win over Minnesota in 1983.
“That was a lot of fun out there today,” Williams said. “Our running back room is so deep. I think it's not really a secret. So we're happy for each other's success, and when we each get opportunities, we all just make the most of it.”
Hawkeyes Roll Despite Missing Star Running Back
Moulton, Iowa's leading rusher, was injured in the fourth quarter of last Saturday's 16-13 win over Iowa State. But the Hawkeyes showed no signs of a drop-off, scoring on their first five possessions and leading 42-0 at halftime.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz praised the young backs for stepping up in Moulton's absence.
“All three of them stepped up and really did well,” Ferentz said. “And it was good to see because they're all young players that we haven't seen a lot on the game field.”
Williams, a third-year player, credited the tight-knit group for their collective success.
“We build off each other,” Williams said. “We steal each other's moves. We argue. But we're like brothers. We're tight. So it's hard not to be happy for everybody else.”
Quarterback Hank Brown Shines in Starting Role
Hank Brown, who won the starting quarterback job after a preseason competition, completed all 12 of his passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns. Brown has started all three games and has firmly established himself atop the depth chart.
“He's helped himself with every opportunity,” Ferentz said.
Northern Iowa Struggles on Both Sides of the Ball
The Panthers (1-2) managed just 155 yards of total offense. Quarterback Jaxon Dailey threw for 91 yards and two interceptions in the lopsided loss.
“We were embarrassed today,” Northern Iowa coach Todd Stepsis said. “At the same time, we knew we had a tall task in front of us.”
What's Next for Both Teams
Iowa faces its first Big Ten road test of the season, traveling to Ann Arbor to take on No. 19 Michigan next Saturday. Northern Iowa opens Missouri Valley Football Conference play at home against Illinois State.
Despite the tough loss, Stepsis remains focused on the road ahead.
“I'm disappointed we didn't give Iowa a better game, but at the same time, I know we've got a lot of football left,” he said.
