Iowans should expect hazy skies and potentially degraded air quality today as smoke from dozens of massive wildfires burning across the Pacific Northwest drifts into the Midwest. The National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reports that 51 large, uncontained fires are currently burning in Oregon and Washington, with more than 1.5 million acres already scorched since mid-July.

Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources, described the outbreak as following a six-month sequence of historic winter warmth, extreme low snowpack, severe drought, lightning, heat, and strong winds. A study published last week found that the western snow drought was made four times more likely by climate change, highlighting how rising temperatures are setting the stage for devastating fires.
Heat Dome Shifts West, Raising Fire Risk
While the Pacific Northwest gets a brief break from fire weather today, more dry and windy conditions are expected. An enormous heat dome currently affecting the central U.S. will help funnel smoke from the Northwest to the East Coast for days to come. Forecasters also expect extreme temperatures to shift westward later this week, elevating wildfire risk across much of the Southwest and interior California.
This comes just two weeks after smoke from Canadian wildfires triggered widespread air quality alerts in the eastern U.S. The pattern underscores a growing reality: even regions far from active wildfires are now feeling their effects.
