Iowa State Fair Poised to Break All-Time Attendance Record This Weekend
With two days left in the 2026 Iowa State Fair, the iconic 11-day celebration is on track to shatter its all-time attendance record, thanks to a record-setting Friday and picture-perfect weather for the final weekend.
The fair reported 114,256 visitors on Friday, Aug. 21, a new high for Day 9 of the event. That brings total attendance through nine days to 984,330, leaving the fair just 198,352 short of the 1,182,682 record set in 2024.
What will it take to set the all-time record?
If the fair draws only its current average daily attendance of 109,370 on Saturday and Sunday, it will surpass the 2024 record by 20,829, pushing the total past 1.2 million. Given the strong crowds so far, the record appears well within reach.
Why is this year's fair poised for a record?
Unlike 2025, when the final weekend brought extreme heat and lagging attendance, this year's weather is ideal for fairgoers. Saturday reached a sunny high of 84 degrees, and Sunday's forecast calls for a moderate 81 degrees. The only chance of rain comes early Monday, after vendors and exhibitors begin packing up.
This year's fair has already set daily attendance records on three separate days. Sunday, Aug. 16, broke the Day 4 record with 123,140 visitors, and Monday, Aug. 17, set a Day 5 record with 111,159 attendees.
When will we know for sure if the record fell?
The official attendance number for Saturday is expected Sunday, with the final total for the 2026 fair released Monday. Fair officials and Iowa families alike will be watching closely.
How does this year compare to recent fairs?
Since the fair was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, attendance has bounced back strongly.
