Kyle Larson: NASCAR and dirt racing are equal, and Iowa proves it
Every August, about a hundred sprint car drivers roll into Knoxville Raceway in Iowa for the Knoxville Nationals. Sixty of them have the type of equipment that rivals anything you'd see in a professional touring series. The total prize pool crosses a million dollars, and it is noticeably one of the toughest races in American motorsport. Kyle Larson has won it four times. Jeff Gluck of Dirty Mo Media wanted to know how NASCAR fans should actually think about that.
In a Dirty Mo Media clip posted on X, Larson's answer was without any sense of sugarcoating:
“Every series to me feels equal,” Kyle Larson said. “There's not one series that's better than the other. I don't think Cup is better than Outlaws or High Limit, and I don't think any of the dirt series are better than the Cup guys either. Like it's all fairly equal.”
Coming from a NASCAR Cup Series champion, that is a pretty loaded statement. But Larson had solid reasoning for it. He pointed to the fact that NASCAR fans have grown up believing the Cup Series is where all the best drivers in the world end up. His opinion is that they are right, but only partly. The best drivers are everywhere.
“There's amazing, talented drivers that if things would have went right throughout their paths, have the talent to make it to the Cup Series,” he said. “Those guys kick my b -- a lot of times.”
How Kyle Larson won the 2026 Knoxville Nationals
Kyle Larson's 2026 win set the context for what he said in the Jeff Gluck availability. Larson finished sixth in the Saturday night Cup race, got on a private jet to Pella, Iowa, and came to Knoxville Raceway by police escort just before the main event. He had zero practice laps in the car and started from the pole in his Silva Motorsports No. 57, leading all 50 laps. The winner's check was $200,000.
Behind him, Sheldon Haudenschild in the Stenhouse Jr./Marshall Racing No. 18 finished second. Former NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne took third. Logan Schuchart came from 12th to finish fifth. David Gravel, James McFadden, and Michael Kofoid followed. These are full-time dirt racers with serious equipment and serious resumes, and Kyle Larson beat them after flying in from a Cup Series race.
It was his fourth Nationals title overall, joining wins in 2021, 2023, and 2024. In the all-time list, Steve Kinser is at the top with 12 titles. Donny Schatz has 11. Doug Wolfgang has five. Kyle Larson is now at four, tied with Danny Lasoski.
Why the NASCAR versus dirt racing debate misses the point
This is where the NASCAR versus dirt conversation usually takes a slightly different direction. Fans see Larson win on dirt and assume the competition is a level below. Larson's point, as opposed to that, is that it is not.
“It's definitely hard to describe to strictly NASCAR fans because they've grown up their whole lives thinking that all the world's best race car drivers make it to the Cup Series,” he said. “And they are. But they're also super, super good in sprint cars.”
More than just trophies, sprint car racing is what keeps Larson on his toes as he adapts and competes with top racers. And that in turn helps him to compete and run well on Sundays.
