Kyle Larson to Skip Knoxville Nationals Finale for Richmond Cup Race
Iowa racing fans hoping to see Kyle Larson chase a Knoxville Nationals title this weekend will be disappointed. The reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion is entered for the 65th annual Knoxville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway, but the Saturday night finale directly clashes with his Cup Series commitment at Richmond Raceway. Unless weather intervenes, Larson will miss the $200,000-to-win sprint car main event.
Larson, who drives the No. 5 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports in NASCAR, has been a regular at Knoxville during his dirt racing career. The Knoxville Nationals run August 12-15, with qualifying and preliminary races on Wednesday and Thursday, Hard Knox Night on Friday, and the championship feature scheduled for Saturday night. The Cook Out 400 at Richmond is set for 7 p.m. ET Saturday, covering 400 laps.
Why Kyle Larson Can't Race Both Events
NASCAR practice and qualifying at Richmond take place Friday at 3:30 p.m. ET, with the Cup race following Saturday evening. While Larson can compete in Thursday's Knoxville preliminary, he cannot race the Knoxville finale and the Richmond Cup race unless rain forces a schedule change at either venue.
Asked about the possibility of weather helping him manage the conflict, Larson said:
“They'd be racing at the same time, right? So, no. I can't be in two places at once. We would obviously need rain in one of the places, but the weather looks good so far. It's not a big deal.”
When asked whether he would prefer the Cup race not to run head-to-head with Knoxville, Larson added:
“Yeah, but I mean, it's just kind of is what it is. Like, I don't control the schedule. I've gotten lucky that it's fallen on Sunday races forever. It just hasn't worked out this year and essentially next year, but, it's fine.”
Larson's Strong Week on Iowa Dirt
Larson has enjoyed a productive week on Iowa dirt. He won the Capitani Classic at Knoxville Raceway on Sunday after a late decision to enter, then followed it with his third consecutive Front Row Challenge victory at Southern Iowa Speedway on Tuesday. Meanwhile, he is still searching for his first Cup Series victory since Kansas Speedway in May 2025.
Financial Incentives Behind Knoxville Entry
Larson's decision to remain entered for Knoxville is not simply about trying to race Saturday night. There is significant money available before the championship event, giving Larson and Paul Silva's No. 57 team reason to pursue qualifying despite knowing he will be absent Saturday. The main event pays $200,000 to the winner, while the overall event purse is $1,187,605.
Larson explained that winning his preliminary night pays $12,000, while simply locking the car into the Knoxville Nationals feature provides another $15,000.
“It pays really good to win the prelim, like $12,000 and Osky (Oskaloosa) pays $21,000 or something and locking into the Nationals feature pays $15,000 so that's a lot of money. If it works out that we can race the feature, because it rained somewhere, that's great, but the odds of that aren't great,” he told Motorsports.com.
Driver Swap Could Keep No. 57 in the Field
The Knoxville Nationals have a provision that could allow the No. 57 to compete even if Larson cannot make the finale. The rules allow a driver swap because it is the car that locks into the field rather than the driver. If Larson qualifies the car but cannot race Saturday due to Richmond, crew member Trevor Canales could start the car and effectively secure the $15,000 earned for making the feature.
For Iowa fans, this means the No. 57 car will still be part of Saturday's feature, but Larson himself will be 1,000 miles away in Virginia, chasing a Cup Series win instead.
