Liberty Silence Fever Crowd in Brooklyn With Statement Win
The New York Liberty sent a clear message Saturday night, holding off a furious Indiana Fever comeback to win 109-102 in front of a sold-out Barclays Center crowd that was heavily tilted toward the visiting team.
The win carried playoff seeding implications and served as a redemption statement after Indiana embarrassed New York in their previous two meetings this season.
Fever fans take over Barclays Center
The atmosphere felt more like a Fever home game during warmups. Fans packed the arena early, with Iowa and Fever jerseys hanging over railings as spectators clamored for autographs.
One fan said she flew from Spain just to watch Caitlin Clark play. Another young supporter in Fever gear held a sign saying she drove 901 miles for the game.
Despite the pro-Fever crowd, the Liberty made it clear this was their house.
Liberty offense clicks at full strength
New York played its most complete game in weeks, with Leonie Fiebich and Jonquel Jones returning to the lineup for the first time together in seven weeks.
Breanna Stewart led the way with 22 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. Fiebich, playing in her first game since July 3, added 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Jones contributed 19 points and 10 rebounds.
The ball moved crisply, and contributions came from every player on the floor.
Fever rally falls short
Indiana refused to back down. A 7-0 run fueled by Kelsey Mitchell and Caitlin Clark cut the lead to one point with just over four minutes remaining.
A Sophie Cunningham steal led to a Mitchell three-pointer that tied the game at 100 with under two minutes left.
With New York up by three, Sabrina Ionescu drove hard to the basket and converted a tough layup, but the basket was waved off after an offensive foul was called.
Fiebich then played clean defense on Clark, forcing a tough miss. Clark was whistled for a foul on Pauline Astier, who extended the Liberty lead to five and sealed the victory.
What this win means for the Liberty
The Liberty looked nothing like the team that got embarrassed in Indiana twice earlier this season. Saturday proved New York can not only compete with the best but beat them.
The Fever are legitimate title contenders. If New York builds on this victory, the Liberty are too.
For Iowa fans who made the trip, the loss stings. But the Fever remain one of the league's most dangerous teams, and this rivalry is far from settled.
