Lioness Season 3 Must Finally Kill a Main Character to Match Its High Stakes
Taylor Sheridan's military thriller Lioness has kept its core team alive through two full seasons, but with CIA officer Joe McNamara now kidnapped and tortured by Russian agents, Season 3 is the perfect moment to break that pattern and sacrifice a main character. The show's premise demands it.
The Paramount+ series, starring Zoe Saldaña as Joe McNamara, has raised the stakes higher than ever in its current season. After Joe is brutally abducted, her entire Lioness team and top Delta Force operators are fighting to bring her home before she is transported to Russia.
Why the Lioness Team Has Survived Too Long
Throughout three seasons, Lioness has maintained its main cast, only adding members to Joe's team rather than losing any. Cruz Manuelos (Laysla De Oliveira) and Josie Carrillo (Genesis Rodriguez), the Lionesses from Seasons 1 and 2, have both survived their harrowing assignments and continue serving on Joe's team. Support members Bobby (Jill Wagner), Tucker (LaMonica Garrett), and Two Cups (James Jordan) have also remained relatively unscathed.
The most significant casualty in the series occurred in Season 2's premiere when Dean (Brandon Muirbrook), a member of the tactical retrieval team, died in an altercation. However, Dean was not an immediate part of Joe's core team, giving audiences emotional distance from the loss.
The Show's Premise Demands Real Consequences
Keeping the group intact season after season stretches the credibility of Lioness's central premise, which insists that Joe and her team face life-threatening danger on every mission. In real warfare, soldiers are lost. The series has yet to show that reality for its main characters.
The show hasn't emphasized the team's inherent danger by killing someone close to Joe since its premiere, when McNamara lost a Lioness off-screen after her cover was blown at a heavily defended ISIS compound. That moment explained why Joe is so hard on Cruz during her initial training, standing as a testament to a Lioness operator's worst-case scenario.
Season 3 Is the Right Time for a Major Loss
With Joe in Russian custody and her team mounting a desperate rescue, Season 3 is primed to disrupt the pattern. A main cast member suffering a fatal wound while extracting their team leader would raise the emotional stakes to match the show's premise and layer on the tragedy Sheridan's other series are known for.
After two seasons of completing missions without significant loss, sacrificing one of Joe's Lionesses or team members would remind audiences just how dangerous their job truly is. It would also honor the show's commitment to depicting the brutal realities of modern warfare and covert operations.
What a Major Character Death Would Mean for the Series
Killing a main character would fundamentally shift the dynamics of Lioness, forcing the surviving team members to confront their own mortality and the cost of their service. It would also give Saldaña's Joe McNamara a deeply personal stake in the aftermath, potentially reshaping her leadership style and the team's approach to future missions.
