Warning: The following contains spoilers for Marshals Season 2, Episode 2, “End of Watch,” which aired on CBS on Sunday, October 11, 2026.
Marshals Season 2 is finally tackling the problem that has haunted Tate Dutton for years. After the teen was kidnapped in the season premiere, the CBS spinoff is pushing Kayce Dutton’s son toward the self-reliance that has kept his family alive for generations. Episode 2, “End of Watch,” makes it clear the rescues have to stop.
What Happened in “End of Watch”
The episode picks up after Tom Weaver’s (Chris Mulkey) attack on East Camp Ranch. Kayce’s US Marshals team is hunting a cop killer, former Gallatin County Sheriff’s Deputy Wayne Plummer, who is targeting law enforcement officers across Montana, including the Marshals’ own Chief Deputy Harry Gifford (Brett Cullen).
Back at the ranch, Kayce (Luke Grimes) is locking things down. As Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos) points out in the episode’s opening, he has installed thermal vision and radar coverage at East Camp. Kayce admits he would lay land mines if it didn’t put the herd at risk, saying he would do anything to keep Tate safe.
Tate (Brecken Merrill), meanwhile, processes the kidnapping at his grandfather John Dutton’s grave. He once believed Tom Weaver was like his own grandfather, a man he spent hours fishing with in the original Yellowstone series. Instead, Weaver became another threat. Still, Tate tells his father he no longer needs rescuing.
Why Tate Keeps Getting Taken
As Kayce and others note in “End of Watch,” this is not the first time Tate has been kidnapped. The Beck brothers took him from the Yellowstone Ranch at the end of Yellowstone Season 2, using the boy as leverage in their vendetta against John Dutton. That incident left Tate traumatized.
This time, he appears to be coping better. “I’m strong. That’s how you and grandpa raised me to be,” Tate tells Kayce, calling it “the Dutton way.”
But strength and preparedness are not the same thing. Tate has actually shot and killed an attacker twice: once in the Yellowstone Season 4 premiere, and again in the Marshals Season 1 finale, when he defended Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) at Kayce’s cabin. Despite that record, he was defenseless when Weaver’s men hauled him to a Wyoming ranch. He remains the only modern Dutton who does not take daily measures to protect himself.
The Dutton Legacy Was Never About Land
Kayce puts the family philosophy plainly in the episode. The Dutton legacy, he tells his son, “was never about land.” “It was about always having to fight.”
That is the tension Marshals is setting up. Kayce knows what a lifetime of fighting costs, and he does not want Tate to become like him. But with Tate turning 18 and Kayce consumed by dangerous US Marshals work, hovering is no longer realistic. Kayce admits it bothers him not knowing where his son is. As Rainwater reminds him, there is no guarantee Tate can escape the death and destruction he has already been part of.
The answer, according to the arc the show is building, is for Kayce to stop shielding Tate and start training him. That means teaching his son to carry and use a handgun properly, and possibly passing along some of his Navy SEAL tactics. If Kayce will not take Tate out of Montana, and everything in the story suggests he will not, more threats are coming. The Dutton family never would have survived generations of enemies without its best fighters.
Why This Storyline Resonates
There is something refreshingly old-fashioned about a show treating self-defense as a family duty rather than a character flaw. The Duttons’ creed, that freedom and land require the willingness to defend both, has always been the spine of Taylor Sheridan’s franchise. Marshals Season 2 is handing that creed to its youngest character, and the series is stronger for it.
Episode 2 also delivers on the law enforcement front, with the Marshals hunting a killer who targets police officers. For a franchise built on respect for the men and women who wear the badge, “End of Watch” leans into that loyalty at exactly the right moment.
Marshals airs Sundays on CBS. Season 2 is created by Spencer Hudnut, with executive producers including Taylor Sheridan, Luke Grimes, and John Linson.
