Michigan CB Shamari Earls Names the Big Ten Receivers He Wants to Cover
Michigan cornerback Shamari Earls has made it clear he isn't lacking confidence. The Wolverines' fourth cornerback has circled three of the Big Ten's top receivers he wants to defend this season, including one from Iowa's rival schedule and two from the conference's elite programs.
Speaking with reporters this week, Earls named Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith, Indiana's Nick Marsh, and Oregon's Evan Stewart as the receivers he's targeting. The admission comes as Michigan prepares to open Big Ten play against Iowa on Sept. 26 at the Big House.
Who is Shamari Earls?
Earls is in his second season with the Wolverines and has been called a starter by the coaching staff despite lining up behind Jyaire Hill, Zeke Berry, and Smith Snowden on the depth chart. He's played 36 snaps across Michigan's first two games, and Pro Football Focus has given him a 69.1 coverage grade. He's allowed just one catch on three targets.
The Virginia native has embraced his role while waiting for a larger opportunity. He said the three corners ahead of him have helped him improve his game.
What Earls said about his development
Earls pointed to film study and technique as the areas where he's grown the most since arriving in Ann Arbor.
Really just slowing the game down, getting more in the film room, technique things, and just overall being a better corner instead of focusing on just straight my athleticism, what I was gifted with. That's one thing I need to work on, better hand placement and just being more aware.
He also emphasized the mental side of playing cornerback.
Just stay focused. As a corner you gotta be calm and poised, 'cause really anything can happen, and you don't want anything to get into your head.
Earls prefers man coverage
Earls said he's comfortable in both zone and man schemes under defensive coordinator Jay Hill, but he clearly has a preference.
Honestly, I like it. I'm more of getting out, hands-on, getting guys' grills. Zone, I can do anything you need me to, zone, man, but I prefer man, just get hands on guys, be in their face, and just run and cover them.
What this means for Iowa
Iowa's passing attack hasn't been the focal point of the offense in recent years, but the Hawkeyes will face a Michigan defense that ranks among the nation's best through two weeks. The Wolverines' defensive line has been disruptive, the linebackers are making plays, and the secondary has been opportunistic.
Earls will likely see the field Saturday when Michigan hosts UTEP at 3:30 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network. The Iowa game follows a week later.
