Michigan vs Penn State: Big Ten Showdown Set for Oct. 17 at 3:30 PM
Michigan football will face Penn State on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 3:30 p.m. ET in a critical Week 7 Big Ten matchup. Both teams enter the game winless in conference play, making this a must-win contest for two programs desperate to salvage their seasons.
The television network for the game will be announced Monday, Oct. 12, according to the program. The matchup pits two traditional Big Ten powers against each other in what could be a defining moment for both first-year head coaches.
Two struggling programs meet in pivotal conference clash
Michigan (3-2, 0-2 Big Ten) comes off its bye week after suffering back-to-back losses, including a 20-14 defeat at Minnesota. That loss marked the first time the Wolverines lost possession of the Little Brown Jug since 2014 and their first loss in Minneapolis since 1977.
The Wolverines are winless through two Big Ten games for the first time since 2014 and just the second time since 1967. Head coach Kyle Whittingham called this stretch perhaps “the biggest challenge” he has faced in more than four decades as a coach.
Penn State (3-2, 0-2) is equally reeling under first-year head coach Matt Campbell. The Nittany Lions blew a 17-point lead at home to Wisconsin before getting pounded 34-13 at Northwestern in the debut of the new Ryan Field.
Both teams opened ranked, now fighting for survival
Both Michigan and Penn State opened the season ranked in the top 20. Now each needs this victory to get its season back on track.
Michigan faces a brutal remaining schedule with four games against teams currently ranked in the coaches poll. The Wolverines host No. 5 Indiana and No. 22 UCLA, with road trips to No. 13 Oregon and No. 6 Ohio State.
The Penn State game is one of three remaining contests against teams outside the top 25. The other two are a road game at Rutgers and a home rivalry matchup with Michigan State.
What is ailing the Wolverines?
Penalties, turnovers, and a broken offense that has questions about identity and quarterback play are all at the top of the list of concerns for Michigan.
The Wolverines haven't trailed by more than one possession at any point this season, but they have been tied or trailing in the fourth quarter in four games. This will be Michigan's third game at 3:30 p.m. through its first six contests, going 1-1 so far with a 52-17 win over UTEP and a 20-19 loss to Iowa.

Why this game matters for the Big Ten picture
With both teams sitting at 0-2 in conference play, the loser faces an almost insurmountable climb back into Big Ten contention. Michigan has not started 0-3 in conference play since 1967, and this game will test the resilience of both programs under new leadership.
The Wolverines will need to fix their offensive identity and clean up costly mistakes to avoid what would be a historically poor start to the conference season.
