NASCAR Returns to Iowa Roots as Racing Weekend Kicks Off Nationwide
Iowa racing fans have plenty to cheer about this week as NASCAR's top series heads to New Hampshire while the sport's developmental ranks prepare for a return to Daytona. The action-packed weekend also features Formula 1's return from its summer break and IndyCar's historic debut in the nation's capital.
For Iowans, the spotlight shines brightest on the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series, where Carson Kvapil claimed his second straight victory in dramatic fashion at Iowa Speedway in Newton. Kvapil took the lead from Ross Chastain on an overtime restart, prevailing in double overtime to secure the win.
NASCAR Cup Series: New Hampshire Motor Speedway
The Cup Series heads to the Magic Mile in Loudon, New Hampshire, for a 301-lap, 318.46-mile race. Practice runs Saturday at 10:35 a.m. with qualifying at 11:40 a.m. The green flag drops Sunday at 3 p.m. on USA Network.
Joey Logano enters the weekend with momentum after his Richmond victory. Logano used fresher tires to pass Christopher Bell with 24 laps remaining, then held off Chase Briscoe late to secure the win.
Last year's New Hampshire race saw Ryan Blaney take the checkered flag during the playoffs, earning his third victory of the season and a spot in the Round of 8. This year's event falls during the regular season as drivers jockey for playoff positioning.
The series heads to Daytona Beach, Florida, on August 29 for the next race.
NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series: Iowa's Own Shines
Carson Kvapil's double-overtime victory at Iowa Speedway marked his second consecutive series win. The young driver took command on the restart and never looked back, delivering a thrilling finish for the Hawkeye State crowd.
The series returns to Daytona Beach on August 28 for its next race.
NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series: Team EJP 175
The Truck Series also competes at New Hampshire Motor Speedway this weekend. The 175-lap, 185.15-mile race takes place Saturday at 1:30 p.m. on FS1. Practice runs Friday at 4 p.m. with qualifying at 5:05 p.m.
Corey Heim dominated last year's crash-filled race from the pole, sweeping both stages and leading a race-high 124 laps en route to his 20th career series victory.
Kaden Honeycutt comes in hot after dominating at Richmond, leading 225 of 250 laps and taking control for good with 29 laps remaining. The win marked his second career victory and second of the season. The series heads to Bristol, Tennessee, on September 17.
Formula 1: Dutch Grand Prix Returns From Summer Break
Formula 1 resumes action with the Heineken Dutch Grand Prix at Circuit Zandvoort. The 72-lap, 190.5-mile race takes place Sunday at 9 a.m. on Apple TV. Practice and sprint qualifying run Friday, with the sprint race and qualifying Saturday.
Last year, Oscar Piastri achieved a rare grand slam, converting pole position into his seventh victory of the season despite a chaotic race featuring multiple safety car periods.
Lando Norris earned his first victory of the season last time out after teammate Piastri made contact with Carlos Sainz and later retired. The series heads to Monza, Italy, on September 6.
IndyCar: Historic Debut in Washington, D.C.
The NTT IndyCar Series makes history this weekend with the inaugural Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C. The 147-lap, 249.9-mile race winds through the streets around the National Mall as part of the nation's 250th anniversary celebration. Sunday's race starts at 1 p.m. on FOX.
Marcus Ericsson ended a 63-race winless drought with a late charge at Markham, passing Romain Grosjean with five laps remaining for his fifth career series victory. The series heads to West Allis, Wisconsin, on August 29.
NHRA and World of Outlaws Action
The NHRA heads to Brainerd International Raceway in Minnesota for the Brainerd Nationals. Qualifying runs Friday and Saturday, with eliminations Sunday at 11 a.m. The series heads to Indianapolis on September 7.
World of Outlaws fans can look forward to the Hawkeye 100 and other events running August 26 through 30, bringing sprint car racing excitement to the region.
