Newton Jury Awards $105K in Police Overreach Case
An Iowa jury has sent a clear message about government accountability, awarding $105,000 to a Newton man arrested for drunken driving despite blowing a 0.00 on a breath test and passing every field sobriety test. The judgment against the City of Newton and two police officers highlights the consequences when law enforcement oversteps its authority.
Traffic Stop Turns Into Wrongful Arrest
The incident began just after midnight on Aug. 28, 2022, when Tayvin Galanakis drove past a patrol car without dimming his headlights for oncoming traffic. Body-camera footage later obtained and posted online by Galanakis shows he told Officers Nathan Winters and Christopher Wing that he was driving with his high beams on because one of his headlights had a broken bulb.
Instead of accepting that explanation, the officers pressed Galanakis about drinking.
