Phillies' Cristopher Sanchez Takes Over MLB Lead With 16th Win

Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Cristopher Sanchez moved into sole possession of the major league lead in wins Monday night, picking up his 16th victory in a 6-5 decision over the Miami Marlins at Citizens Bank Park.

Sanchez, who entered the game tied with Boston's Sonny Gray at 15 wins, pitched six innings of one-run ball to improve to 16-4 with a 2.51 ERA on the season. The win came on the heels of a road trip that included a stop in Iowa, where the Phillies played the cornfield-state portion of their schedule before returning home for a critical six-game homestand.

The 28-year-old lefty has been dominant at home all season, running his record to 11-1 in 15 starts at Citizens Bank Park with a 1.42 ERA in those games. For his career, Sanchez is 29-9 with a 2.43 ERA in 73 games at the ballpark.

Sanchez Chasing 20-Win Plateau

If the Phillies stay on their regular rotation, Sanchez could make seven more starts as he chases the 20-win mark, a feat no major league pitcher has accomplished in the last two seasons. Roy Halladay was the last Phillie to reach that plateau, winning 21 games in 2010.

Sanchez wasn't at his sharpest Monday, allowing 11 base runners on eight hits and three walks. But he delivered in the clutch, recording the third out of an inning with two runners on base three times, including two strikeouts.

Late-Inning Drama Keeps Phillies Rolling

The Phillies led 4-1 when Sanchez departed, but the Marlins mounted a comeback. A controversial replay call in the seventh inning limited Miami to two runs instead of three when Javier Sanoja's bases-loaded double was initially ruled foul before being overturned. The replay official placed runners at second and third, a decision that drew the ire of Marlins manager Clayton McCullough, who was ejected.

Philadelphia answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh, but left the bases loaded. Brian Navarretto's eighth-inning homer made it a one-run game before Alec Bohm delivered a key base hit to score Bryce Harper, who reached base four times on three hits and a walk.

Jhoan Duran pitched the ninth for his 27th save, allowing a run but closing out the Phillies' fourth straight victory.

Wild Card Implications

The win carries significant weight in the National League wild card race. The Phillies hold the second wild card berth, with both the Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals looking up at them in the standings. The Cardinals, who the Phillies will host this weekend, are among the teams trying to close the gap.

Philadelphia has two more games against Miami before welcoming St. Louis for a weekend series, making this homestand pivotal for their postseason positioning.
