Purdue's 2026 gauntlet: 11 preseason All-Americans, 7 from IU and Notre Dame

Barry Odom's rebuilding project at Purdue just got a whole lot harder. The Boilermakers will face 11 Associated Press preseason All-Americans in 2026, and seven of them wear the uniforms of their two biggest rivals.

Indiana leads the way with four selections, while Notre Dame has three. Minnesota added two more, and Iowa and UCLA each have one. Throw in five opponents ranked in the AP Preseason Poll, and the road back to relevance in West Lafayette is steep.

Here's a breakdown of the elite talent standing between Purdue and a bounce-back season.

Indiana Hoosiers: Four All-Americans headline the defending champs

Carter Smith, OT (First Team)

The 6-foot-5, 313-pound left tackle anchored an Indiana offensive line that powered a 212.88 yards-per-game rushing attack in 2025. The Hoosiers surrendered just 1.56 sacks per game en route to a national championship. Smith, a consensus All-American, returns for his fifth season.

Rolijah Hardy, LB (First Team)

Hardy was a do-it-all linebacker for the Hoosiers, racking up a team-high 102 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, eight sacks, five pass breakups and four quarterback hurries in 16 starts. He's entering his third college season.

Charlie Becker, WR (Second Team)

Becker led the Big Ten with 19.97 yards per catch in 2025, hauling in 34 receptions for 679 yards and four touchdowns. He's the top returning pass-catcher for the defending champs.

Tyrique Tucker, DL (Second Team)

The 6-foot, 307-pound Tucker finished 2025 with 40 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and six sacks. He's a run-stuffer who can also pressure the quarterback.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish: Three playmakers on the defensive side

Leonard Moore, CB (First Team)

Moore was a ballhawk for the Irish in 2025, totaling five interceptions (including a pick-six), seven pass breakups, 31 tackles and a forced fumble. He's one of the most electric defensive backs in the country.

Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa, LB (Second Team)

Viliamu-Asa played 11 games last fall, making two starts, and tallied 48 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, one interception and two pass breakups. Expect a much bigger role in 2026.

Brauntae Johnson, S (Second Team)

Johnson picked off four passes, broke up three more and recorded 48 tackles in 10 games. He also scored on a pick-six and returned a blocked punt for a touchdown. A true playmaker in the secondary.

Minnesota Golden Gophers: Two All-Americans in the trenches

Greg Johnson, G (Second Team)

Johnson has started 26 straight games for Minnesota, playing center, left guard, right tackle and left tackle. The 6-foot-6, 325-pounder is an Academic All-Big Ten selection and a versatile anchor up front.

Anthony Smith, DE (Second Team)

Smith is arguably the Big Ten's top pass-rusher. He racked up 17.5 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks in 2025 after posting 11.5 tackles for loss and six sacks the year before.

Iowa Hawkeyes: One All-American on the offensive line

Kade Pieper, C (First Team)

Pieper started all 13 games at right guard for Iowa in 2025, helping the Hawkeyes win the Joe Moore Award as the nation's best offensive line. The 6-foot-3, 298-pounder moves to center this fall.

UCLA Bruins: A dynamic all-purpose weapon

Wayne Knight, AP (First Team)

Knight followed head coach Bob Chesney from James Madison to UCLA. He set a JMU record with 2,039 all-purpose yards in 2025, including 1,373 rushing yards, 397 receiving yards, 180 punt return yards and 89 kickoff return yards. He scored 10 total touchdowns.

What this means for Purdue's 2026 season

Purdue faces a brutal schedule that includes five AP Top 25 teams and now 11 preseason All-Americans. The Boilermakers' matchups against Indiana and Notre Dame will be particularly daunting, given the concentration of elite talent on those rosters.

For Odom, the path forward is clear: survive the gauntlet, develop young talent and build for the future. The 2026 season will test just how far this program has come.
