Tony DiNozzo Takes Over as NCIS Director in Season 24 Premiere
CBS has officially confirmed that Michael Weatherly's Tony DiNozzo is the new NCIS director, stepping into the role left vacant by Leon Vance in the Season 24 premiere.
The move, revealed in the episode titled “Wayward Son” which aired Tuesday, October 6, resolves the leadership vacuum created when Vance (Rocky Carroll) was killed in the show's 1000th episode. Tony's return to the flagship series is now a season-long arc, but his new title changes everything for the team.
How Tony DiNozzo Became NCIS Director
Tony returns to Washington to open a satellite office for his private security firm, Salus Mondiale. But the Secretary of the Navy has other plans. SECNAV offers him the director position, which Tony initially turns down. That changes when her daughter is kidnapped and Tony's swift action saves her, forcing him into the role.
Fans expecting Gabriel LaRoche (Seamus Deaver) to take the top job were surprised. LaRoche had been enforcing strict rules and benching most of the Major Case Response Team. It turns out Tony was SECNAV's first choice all along.
Why Tony's Return Works Better Than the Spinoff
Weatherly previously returned to NCIS in Season 21 for a tribute to Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard after David McCallum's death. That appearance was brief, just one scene with Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) and Timothy McGee (Sean Murray).
The NCIS: Tony & Ziva spinoff, which launched on Paramount+ in 2025, was canceled after one season. The characters' separation from the flagship format didn't help. Tony's return to the original show gives fans what they wanted: the character back where he built his legacy, with lasting connections to Palmer and McGee.
What Tony's Leadership Means for the Team
The premiere shows McGee getting to know a more professional side of Tony. The spinoff upgraded the character, showing what he had been doing for the past decade, which helps justify his return as director.
As for Ziva David (Cote de Pablo), showrunner Steven D. Binder confirmed she's out of the picture for now.
NCIS Season 24 airs Tuesdays on CBS.
