Trump-Backed Julia Letlow Wins Louisiana Senate Primary Amid Mixed National Results
U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow has won the Louisiana Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate, delivering a victory for President Donald Trump's effort to hold establishment Republicans accountable. Letlow defeated state Treasurer John Fleming in a Saturday runoff. The win comes as Trump's endorsement record shows mixed results nationally, including a high-profile loss in Iowa's recent gubernatorial primary.
How Julia Letlow Secured the Louisiana Nomination
Letlow finished first in the May 16 primary with nearly 45% of the vote. She outpaced Fleming at 28% and Sen. Bill Cassidy at 25%. A super PAC supporting Letlow accounted for $4.1 million in ad spending over the last six weeks. She also held strong backing from Gov. Jeff Landry and U.S. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise. Letlow carried parishes across the state, from rural northern Louisiana to the New Orleans area.
For many voters, the president's endorsement was the deciding factor.
