Ty Gibbs Rises to Second in Cup Standings After Dominant Iowa Speedway Win

Iowa Speedway played host to a career-defining moment for 23-year-old Ty Gibbs on Aug. 9, as the Joe Gibbs Racing driver captured his second career NASCAR Cup Series victory at the Iowa Corn 350. The win vaulted Gibbs to second place in the season standings, cementing his status as a legitimate championship contender.
Gibbs, who entered the Cup Series as a highly touted prospect in 2023, struggled to find Victory Lane in his first three seasons. He barely missed the playoffs as a rookie, snuck in during his second year, and fell short again last season. But 2026 has been a different story.
“This year has been a lot of fun,” Gibbs said after the race. “It was a really great day for us. Scored a lot of points in the last few races. I think we were a high-stage-point guy. To be able to finish it off today was awesome.”
How Gibbs Climbed the Standings
Gibbs led 20 laps at Iowa Speedway, holding off a hard-charging teammate Christopher Bell in the closing moments. The victory pushed him to second in the Cup Series standings, seven points ahead of Ryan Blaney and 103 points behind leader Denny Hamlin with three weeks remaining in the regular season.
Gibbs has ranked inside the top four in four of the last six races, showing consistent speed and racecraft. A year ago, he held the 16th position in the standings.
“I’ve been in contention at a lot of these, and it’s been so much fun this year, so just keep working hard,” Gibbs said.
Christopher Bell’s Frustrating Second-Place Streak
Bell, Gibbs’ teammate at Joe Gibbs Racing, has not won a race this season despite finishing second seven times. That includes runner-up finishes in four of the last five weeks, including the last two. The streak has propelled Bell to sixth in the standings.
Last year, Bell won four races. He was not pleased after Sunday’s outing.
“This is what you call a bad second-place finish, for sure,” Bell said. “I don’t know what else to say. Ty did a really good job. He did a great job managing the race. I could tell that he was slipping and sliding around. Similar to two weeks ago with Corey Heim, he just didn’t make a mistake.”
NASCAR Schedule Heads to Richmond
After a break last week, NASCAR will race every weekend through the championship in November. Next up is the Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway on Saturday, Aug. 15 at 7 p.m. ET, airing on USA Network.
The man to beat at Richmond is Austin Dillon, who resides 27th in points but has won the last two races at the track. He led 107 laps during the 2025 event, proving his dominance there is no fluke.
