UFC Freedom 250: Trump Brings Championship Fights to the White House
On June 14, the White House South Lawn will transform into an arena for UFC Freedom 250. The event is part of the official America250 festivities, and it is exactly what President Trump promised Iowans he would deliver.
From Iowa Rally to the South Lawn
Trump first dropped the news during an Iowa rally in July 2025. He told the crowd that the UFC was coming to the White House, and he made it clear that Dana White was the man for the job.
We have a lot of land there. Dana's going to do it. We're going to have a UFC fight, a championship fight, full fight... and we're going to do that as part of 250 also.
Now, less than a year later, that promise is becoming a reality. The event also falls on Trump's birthday, adding to the celebratory atmosphere for the nation's 250th summer. While the mainstream media might scratch their heads, fans of mixed martial arts see this as a huge win for a sport that the political establishment once tried to destroy.
Sticking It to the Establishment
The relationship between Dana White and Donald Trump goes back decades. When White took over the UFC in 2001, he hosted his first events at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. While other venues turned away from the struggling sport, Trump embraced it. White has never forgotten that loyalty, endorsing Trump in all three of his presidential campaigns.
In return, Trump has praised White as a great and tough guy.
Nobody's done a better job in sports,Trump said about the UFC CEO during his 2024 acceptance speech.
The White House event is the ultimate victory for MMA. In 1996, the late Senator John McCain famously tried to ban the sport, calling it human cockfighting. The D.C. establishment looked down on MMA for years. Now, the sport is headlining the most famous address in the world. It is a testament to American grit, fierce individualism, and perseverance.
The Setup on the South Lawn
Building a UFC arena on the South Lawn is no small feat. A massive 92-foot-high lighting rig, nicknamed The Claw, now towers over the property. It weighs 600 tons and hangs over the 13-ton steel octagon. Construction crews laid industrial matting over the historic turf to protect it from the 5,000 attendees expected at the event.
The South Lawn usually hosts the Easter Egg Roll and staff barbecues, but on June 14, it will host championship combat. Trump even hinted that the massive lighting structure might become a permanent fixture, comparing it to the Eiffel Tower.
Many don't know that in Paris, France, the Eiffel Tower... it was supposed to be taken down immediately after the World's Fair, and then they said, 'You know, we sorta like it, let's leave it up a little bit longer.' Well, they never took it down. And, you know, we're building something in front of the White House that's quite attractive to a lot of people... and maybe we'll never, ever take it down.
The Fight Card
The main event features a championship unification bout between undefeated UFC Lightweight Champion Ilia Topuria and interim champion Justin Gaethje. Gaethje, a decorated collegiate wrestler, is a known Trump supporter who attended a rally in 2020 and credited Trump with cementing MMA in American culture.
The co-main event is an interim UFC Heavyweight Championship bout between Alex Pereira and Ciryl Gane.
The full undercard includes the following matchups:
- Bantamweight bout: Sean O'Malley vs. Aiemann Zahabi
- Heavyweight bout: Josh Hokit vs. Derrick Lewis
- Lightweight bout: Mauricio Ruffy vs. Michael Chandler
- Middleweight bout: Bo Nickal vs. Kyle Daukaus
- Featherweight bout: Diego Lopes vs. Steve Garcia
