UFC Freedom 250: Trump Brings Championship Fights to White House
President Donald Trump is bringing the octagon to the White House South Lawn for UFC Freedom 250, a championship fight card set for June 14 as part of the nation's America250 celebrations. The event marks a historic first for the presidency and for mixed martial arts, a sport that once faced government efforts to shut it down entirely.
Trump first announced the event during an Iowa rally in July 2025, telling the crowd,
We have a lot of land there. Dana's going to do it. We're going to have a UFC fight, a championship fight, full fight, and we're going to do that as part of 250 also.
From 'Human Cockfighting' to the White House Lawn
The journey to the South Lawn has been decades in the making. When Dana White took over as UFC president in 2001, mixed martial arts was still fighting for its survival. In 1996, the late Senator John McCain led an effort to ban the sport in all 50 states, famously calling it human cockfighting. The political establishment wanted nothing to do with it.
Trump, however, saw potential where others didn't. The UFC's first events under White's leadership were held at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. That partnership laid the groundwork for a relationship that has now brought the sport to the most famous address in America.
Nobody's done a better job in sports, Trump said about White during his 2024 acceptance speech. White has endorsed Trump in all three of his presidential campaigns.
Building the Arena on the South Lawn
Constructing a UFC arena on the South Lawn has been no small feat. The property has a 22-degree slope, requiring a 13-ton steel cage octagon to be placed on scaffolding and ballasts to ensure a level fighting surface. A massive 92-foot-high lighting rig, nicknamed The Claw, now towers over the setup. The structure weighs 600 tons.
Industrial matting covers the historic turf to protect it from the weight of the equipment and the expected 5,000 attendees. That crowd size was scaled down from Trump's initial projection of 20,000 to 25,000 due to security requirements.
The South Lawn has traditionally served as the President's backyard, hosting the annual Easter Egg Roll, staff barbecues, and visits from foreign heads of state. Previous presidents have added temporary features like a running track under Clinton and a basketball court under Obama. But a full-scale fight arena is something entirely new.
Will 'The Claw' Stay Permanently?
In a recent TikTok video, Trump compared the towering lighting structure to the Eiffel Tower, pointing out that the Paris landmark was originally supposed to be temporary but became a permanent cultural icon.
Many don't know that in Paris, France, the Eiffel Tower, 1889 it was built. It was supposed to be taken down immediately after the World's Fair, and then they said, 'You know, we sorta like it, let's leave it up a little bit longer.' Well, they never took it down. And, you know, we're building something in front of the White House that's quite attractive to a lot of people. It's going to have the big UFC fight on June 14, and I'm looking at it, and maybe we'll never, ever take it down.
The Fight Card
The main event features a Lightweight Championship unification bout between undefeated champion Ilia Topuria and interim champion Justin Gaethje. Gaethje, a decorated collegiate wrestler from the University of Northern Colorado, has been vocal about his support for Trump, attending a rally in 2020 and crediting the President with helping cement MMA in American culture.
The co-main event is an interim Heavyweight Championship bout between Alex Pereira and Ciryl Gane. The full undercard includes:
- Bantamweight: Sean O'Malley vs. Aiemann Zahabi
- Heavyweight: Josh Hokit vs. Derrick Lewis
- Lightweight: Mauricio Ruffy vs. Michael Chandler
- Middleweight: Bo Nickal vs. Kyle Daukaus
- Featherweight: Diego Lopes vs. Steve Garcia

OpSail 2026, a parade of tall ships, has already begun port calls in New Orleans and will continue through July in Virginia, Maryland, New York City, and Boston.
