Washington Huskies hit by injuries ahead of Friday night clash with No. 20 Iowa
Washington will be significantly shorthanded when they host No. 20 Iowa on Friday night, with six players ruled out and a key starter returning to the lineup for the first time in nearly a year.
The Huskies released their final availability report Friday afternoon, listing no players as questionable or game-time decisions. The news is particularly tough in the backfield, where Washington will be without four running backs, including two lost for the season.
Running back room decimated by injuries
Junior running back Jordan Washington is out for the remainder of the season after suffering a neck injury during spring practice. Head coach Jedd Fisch told reporters this week that follow-up scans in late September did not show the progress the team had hoped for.
Sophomore Quaid Carr is also done for the year. Carr hurt his hand during the Apple Cup and was initially expected to be re-evaluated in November, but Fisch confirmed this week that Carr will not return.
Junior Jayden Limar and sophomore Julian McMahan round out the list of unavailable backs. Limar is dealing with an elbow injury from the closing moments of the Apple Cup and will be re-evaluated on November 1. McMahan was spotted in a walking boot before the Minnesota game, and Fisch confirmed he is out for the season.
That leaves Washington with just four scholarship running backs available: Brian Bonner Jr., Trey Cooley, freshman Ansu Sanoe, and sophomore D'Aryhian Clemons. Bonner carried the load last week against USC with 19 carries, while Cooley did not log a single carry.
Secondary loses breakout freshman cornerback
Freshman cornerback Jeron Jones, one of the defensive bright spots for the Huskies this season, is out with an undisclosed injury. Jones played just 30 snaps against USC before being sidelined, and his absence will be felt against an Iowa offense that figures to lean on heavy personnel.
Rahshawn Clark is expected to take the majority of snaps at nickel, with sophomore Ramonz Adams Jr. ready to step in if Clark shifts to safety.
Wide receiver, safety also ruled out
Wide receiver Christian Moss is out with a soft-tissue injury suffered on the first play of the Apple Cup. He will not be re-evaluated until November 1. Fisch expressed uncertainty about whether Moss could receive an injury waiver, noting recent NCAA rule changes on player eligibility.
Safety CJ Christian tore his Achilles during spring practice and will miss the entire season. Fisch was similarly noncommittal about a waiver for the seventh-year safety, saying his understanding is the NCAA will not grant further injury waiver applications after this summer's rule changes.
Center Landen Hatchett returns to the lineup
There is some good news for Washington: center Landen Hatchett is active for the first time since injuring his wrist against Illinois last November. The fourth-year center will make his return to the lineup, giving the offensive line a significant boost.
With Hatchett back, Sam Houston transfer Kolt Dieterich could rotate in at left tackle, left guard, or center as the Huskies work Hatchett back into game shape. Left tackle Kodi Greene is also expected to rotate.
Kickoff between Washington and No. 20 Iowa is set for Friday night. The Hawkeyes will look to exploit a depleted Huskies roster in what promises to be a physical matchup.
