College football's Week 7 slate is stacked with desperation games, and according to CBS Sports' weekly Anxiety Rankings, five matchups pit struggling fanbases against each other in what the outlet dubbed a full schedule of Anxiety Bowls.
Published Thursday, Oct. 16, the CBS Sports feature ranked the five most anxious places in college football heading into the weekend. Two of them involve Big Ten programs familiar to Iowa fans, and one involves a team the Hawkeyes already beat this season.
Michigan and Penn State Meet at a Combined 0-5 in Big Ten Play
The most stunning entry on the list is Penn State at Michigan. CBS Sports noted that neither team was guaranteed a strong 2026 season with new head coaches, but nobody expected both to enter this game a combined 0-5 in conference play.
If Penn State loses, the Nittany Lions would be 0-4 in Big Ten play for only the fifth time in school history, and for the second straight season. A Michigan loss would put the Wolverines at 0-3 in the conference for the first time since 1967.
Michigan's season started with a controversial win over Western Michigan, followed by a win over Oklahoma that felt bigger at the time. Losses to Iowa and Minnesota erased any goodwill. CBS Sports pointed out that if Penn State comes into Ann Arbor and beats Michigan the way Iowa did, the Wolverines sit at 3-3 with no guarantee of reaching a bowl game, and a schedule that still includes Indiana, Oregon, UCLA and Ohio State.
Iowa fans will remember the Hawkeyes went into Michigan and won earlier this season, a result that now looks like one of the more decisive outcomes in a chaotic Big Ten year.
Nebraska at Oregon: A Game Nobody Can Afford to Lose
Nebraska travels to Oregon in another Anxiety Bowl. The Ducks fell out of the AP Top 25 after losing to UCLA, a defeat CBS Sports said dealt a serious blow to Oregon's playoff hopes. A loss to Nebraska would erase them entirely.
Nebraska, meanwhile, is coming off a close loss to Indiana that CBS Sports described as evidence the program is improving. The Cornhuskers had a chance to win on the road, which is more than could be said in recent years. But Cornhusker fans carry the scars of past letdowns, and the possibility of Dylan Raiola starting for Oregon after being benched against UCLA adds another layer of worry for both sides.
The stakes are lopsided in perception, too. If Oregon wins, it beats a team nobody respects. If Nebraska wins, it beats a 3-3 team that lost to Oklahoma State and UCLA. Neither fanbase gets much credit for a victory here.
Florida at No. 7 Texas Tops the Rankings
The No. 1 Anxiety Bowl, per CBS Sports, is Florida at Texas. Texas is 4-1 but coming off a bitter loss to Oklahoma in which the Longhorns gave away points on a blocked punt and a pick-six thrown by Arch Manning. The defeat sparked a week of questions about what is wrong with Texas, including whether Manning's famous last name is carrying his reputation.
Florida is desperate. The Gators started 4-0, including a 52-28 thrashing of Ole Miss that put them in the top 10, then lost two straight to Missouri and South Carolina by a combined 83-36. CBS Sports wrote that Florida's only realistic playoff path now runs through a win over Texas or Georgia, and a loss in Austin likely sends the season spiraling.
Arkansas at Vanderbilt and Virginia at SMU Round Out the List
Arkansas and Vanderbilt, both 0-3 in SEC play, meet in what CBS Sports called the best chance either has to avoid a winless conference season. Vanderbilt's losses have come by an average of 21.7 points, Arkansas' by 20.7.
Virginia at No. 24 SMU is effectively an ACC elimination game. Both teams are alive in the conference title race, and the loser will not be. Miami has separated itself as the league's best team, making the ACC championship the only realistic playoff route for anyone else.
Why This Matters for Iowa Fans
For Iowans, the Week 7 picture reinforces how wide open the Big Ten is. Penn State's collapse and Michigan's struggles are direct results of games Iowa already played a role in, with the Hawkeyes' win in Ann Arbor standing as a signature result. Nebraska's near-miss against Indiana keeps the Cornhuskers relevant in the West Division conversation heading into the heart of the schedule.
More broadly, the chaos at traditional powers like Texas, Michigan and Oregon is a reminder of why the regular season still matters. As one analysis argued,
