ABC Bumps Hit Show 'High Potential' to Mid-Season Despite Massive Ratings
ABC is pulling one of its most-watched shows from the fall lineup. The network confirmed that High Potential, the hit crime procedural starring Kaitlin Olson, will sit out the fall 2026 schedule and return in January 2027 as part of a deliberate mid-season strategy.
Why Is ABC Moving High Potential Out of Fall?
Despite drawing 12 to 17 million total viewers per episode, High Potential will not air this fall. ABC says the move is intentional, claiming that holding the show for mid-season allows the network to air new episodes in an uninterrupted weekly block without reruns.
The decision ends a two-year run where High Potential dominated network television ratings. The show premiered in September 2024 and quickly became one of the most popular scripted series on broadcast TV.
ABC's fall lineup will still feature familiar names like Abbott Elementary, Grey's Anatomy, and 9-1-1, along with a new comedy drama called R.J. Decker about a disgraced newspaper photographer and ex-con.
What Does This Mean for Season 3's Episode Count?
Viewers can expect fewer episodes in Season 3. The first season ran 13 episodes, standard for a new network series. Season 2 earned a full-season order of 18 episodes. While ABC has not released the official episode count for Season 3, the mid-season schedule leaves less room for a full order.
The network insists the uninterrupted run will benefit the show's storytelling, giving fans consistent weekly episodes rather than scattered breaks.
What Happened in the Season 2 Finale?
Season 3 will pick up after a dramatic cliffhanger. Captain Nick Wagner, played by Steve Howey, was discovered near death from a gunshot wound in the Season 2 finale. Howey will not return for Season 3, as his one-year contract has ended and he is moving on to other projects.
The third season will explore leadership transitions at the precinct while continuing the core team's work. Kaitlin Olson returns as Morgan Gillory, alongside Daniel Sunjata as Detective Karadec, Deniz Akdeniz as Lev
