Albia Softball Suffers First Loss, Eyes Postseason Bounce Back
The third-ranked Albia Lady Dees suffered their first loss of the season, falling 1-0 to seventh-ranked Davenport Assumption at the Eddie Jones Memorial Tournament on Saturday. The defeat ends Albia's historic 25-game winning streak, but the team remains focused on postseason execution and a potential state tournament rematch.
How the Lady Dees' Historic Win Streak Ended
Albia entered the weekend as the only unbeaten high school softball team in Iowa. The Lady Dees set a program record earlier on Saturday, improving to 25-0 after a dominant 9-4 victory over Davenport West. Presley Fisher led the offense with three hits, while Brooke Rubel doubled and drove in three runs. Addie Pearson secured the win in the circle, striking out nine batters over five innings to improve to 5-0 on the season.
The momentum shifted in the tournament finale against Davenport Assumption. The game's lone run came in the fourth inning when Marissa Boynton executed a squeeze bunt, scoring Madison Edwards from third base. Edwards had reached on an infield single and advanced to third after a line drive by Kathyn Snyder was dropped in center field.
Grace Pence, the state ERA leader at 0.22, allowed just her fifth run of the season in her 21st start. Despite the tough loss, Pence kept Albia in striking distance against a fierce opponent.
Missed Opportunities at the Plate
Albia's best chance to tie the game came in the sixth inning. Zoey Zanoni and Madeline Van Loon opened the frame with back-to-back hits, putting the tying run in scoring position. However, Davenport Assumption freshman pitcher Taylor Williamson clamped down. She forced a pop-out from Addi Hill, followed by fly outs from Aliyah Hood and Addie Pearson to end the rally.
Albia head coach Larry Achenbach pointed to execution as the difference maker in the tight matchup.
When it comes right down to it, they made the plays they needed to do to score and we did not. We couldn't get a bunt down with runners at first and second. We had our top hitters up and couldn't get the ball on the ground to move them up or get them in.
Why the Loss Could Benefit Albia in the Postseason
A mid-season loss often serves as a crucial learning tool for teams with championship aspirations. For Albia, falling to a top-ten opponent highlights specific areas for improvement before the games matter most. Coach Achenbach emphasized the team's resilience and mindset moving forward.
The main thing is that we have to bounce back and put this behind us. A loss doesn't define you. What defines you is how you react to that. I think that's what we have to do. We have to come back ready to play this week and be ready to right the ship.
Pearson shared a similar outlook, noting that a regular season loss is far better than an early postseason exit.
This wasn't a conference game. This wasn't a tournament game. Assumption is a really good team. If we had to lose some time, it was better to lose now than during the postseason. We might see Assumption again at state. If we do, we need to get everything down and working. We're going to come back and we're going to get them.
What is Next for Albia Softball?
The Lady Dees (25-1, 12-0 SCC) return to South Central Conference play on Monday, traveling to Knoxville. Albia then hosts Chariton on Tuesday for the final conference game of the season. The regular season wraps up on Friday as the Lady Dees compete against Central Lee and Fairfield in the opening games of the 53rd Ottumwa Classic at Frank Huston Field.
