Albia Softball Suffers First Loss, Eyes Postseason Bounce Back
By John Damon
The third-ranked Albia Lady Dees softball team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 1-0 to seventh-ranked Davenport Assumption at the Eddie Jones Memorial Tournament on Saturday. Despite the narrow defeat, the 25-1 Lady Dees remain focused on resilience and preparing for a strong postseason run.
Albia's Undefeated Streak Ends in Pitchers' Duel
Albia entered the weekend as the only unbeaten high school softball team in Iowa. The Lady Dees had already improved to a program-best 25-0 earlier on Saturday with a 9-4 victory over Davenport West. However, Davenport Assumption managed to squeeze out the only run of the game in the fourth inning.
State ERA leader Grace Pence, who holds a remarkable 0.22 ERA, allowed just her fifth run of the season in her 21st start. Marissa Boynton executed a squeeze bunt that brought Madison Edwards home from third base. Edwards had reached scoring position after an infield single and a dropped line drive in center field by Aliyah Hood.
Coach Achenbach Emphasizes Resilience After Loss
The Lady Dees had their best opportunity to tie the game in the sixth inning. Zoey Zanoni and Madeline Van Loon opened the frame with back-to-back hits, but Assumption freshman pitcher Taylor Williamson forced three consecutive outs to end the rally.
Head coach Larry Achenbach emphasized the importance of resilience and learning from the missed opportunities.
