AP Poll Reality Check: Iowa's Ranking Holds Steady as SEC Hype Fades
As the college football season hits its midpoint, the AP Top 25 poll is revealing a familiar pattern: SEC teams that surge after big wins often stumble just as quickly. For Iowa fans, the takeaway is simple, the Hawkeyes' No. 14 ranking reflects a team that earned its spot through consistent play, not flashy upsets.
Greg Luca, a first-year AP Top 25 voter, broke down his latest ballot and highlighted a critical lesson for evaluating teams like Kentucky, the newest SEC team to ride a wave of hype after a dramatic overtime win against LSU.
Why Kentucky's Rise Should Come With Caution
Kentucky jumped from unranked to No. 15 in the AP poll after a 35-34 overtime win over LSU. It was the Wildcats' second consecutive walkoff two-point conversion victory, following a similar win at South Carolina.
But Luca argues that compelling drama doesn't always translate to a strong resume. Kentucky is a pair of failed two-point tries away from being 3-3 and out of the conversation entirely. The Wildcats rank just No. 47 in SP+ efficiency, a metric that measures overall team strength.
Everyone loves the elation of a breakthrough win and the ensuing field storming, but compelling drama often doesn't equate to a strong resume, Luca wrote.
Luca placed Kentucky at No. 19 on his ballot, four spots below the consensus. He noted that two weeks ago, only 13 of 69 voters ranked Kentucky higher than he did. Now, 47 voters have the Wildcats above his ranking.
The SEC's Second Tier Is Losing Stability
The shifting landscape of the SEC is a central theme in Luca's analysis. Last week, he was comfortable with LSU, Mississippi State, Missouri, Florida, and Ole Miss propping each other up. But after Florida was routed 38-19 by South Carolina and LSU fell to Kentucky, that framework is crumbling.
Luca questions whether Ole Miss's wins over Louisville and LSU hold the same weight after the Rebels' blowout loss to Florida. He also wonders if Missouri's victory over Florida is as valuable as originally thought, and what that means for Mississippi State's signature win over Missouri.
Iowa's Position: A Team That Earned Its Spot
Iowa sits at No. 14 on Luca's ballot, three spots higher than the consensus poll. The Hawkeyes are among a group of teams, including Mississippi State, Nebraska, and Northwestern, that Luca is willing to forgive for losses to elite opponents.
Each of those teams has one loss against an opponent in the top six. Luca remains among the highest voters on all four programs, a stance he acknowledges could turn out to be mistaken.
Maybe that thought process will turn out to be mistaken, too. We still have half the season to find out, he said.
Tennessee and LSU: Analytics vs. Results
Luca is also taking a cautious approach to Tennessee, which moved up to No. 14 in the consensus poll after barely surviving Arkansas. He has the Volunteers at No. 20, citing concerns about their quarterback situation and inconsistent offense.
LSU, meanwhile, ranks No. 9 in SP+ despite its loss to Kentucky. Luca has the Tigers at No. 21, arguing that if the analytics are right, LSU will move up once they prove it in the win column.
Undefeated Teams Get Their Due
With the SEC's second tier looking muddled, Luca moved undefeated BYU, Utah, and UCLA into the top 10 on his ballot. He also expressed skepticism about Texas Tech, which remains unbeaten but has yet to deliver a performance that inspires confidence.
For Iowa fans, the message is clear: the Hawkeyes' ranking is built on substance, not hype. As the second half of the season unfolds, consistency will matter more than ever.
