Chicago Linebacker Igwebuike Commits to Notre Dame Over Iowa
Notre Dame landed a major commitment from Chicago Mount Carmel linebacker Roman Igwebuike, a top-150 national recruit who held offers from Iowa, Iowa State, and dozens of other programs. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound defender chose the Irish over Tennessee, Clemson, Indiana, Missouri, and the Hawkeyes, among others.
Igwebuike is the first linebacker to commit to Notre Dame defensive coordinator Brian Jean-Mary since his arrival in South Bend. The Irish needed reinforcements after losing two previous linebacker commits, and Igwebuike brings a higher ranking and bigger frame than those departures.
Dominant Junior Season
Igwebuike posted eye-popping numbers as a junior for Mount Carmel, which went 14-0 and won an Illinois state championship. He recorded 113 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks, two interceptions, three forced fumbles, three pass breakups, and a fumble recovery. The Caravan defense held Oswego to just three points in the title game.
Scouts praise Igwebuike as a heady, physical inside linebacker who projects well to the Mike position. He combines smooth agility with explosive power at the point of attack, making him a stout run stopper and a force against blockers. His coverage skills improved significantly as a junior, showing good depth and instincts in pass defense.
Recruiting Battle Won by Notre Dame
Igwebuike held offers from nearly 40 programs, including Ohio State, Georgia, Texas, Miami, Oklahoma, Oregon, Clemson, USC, Florida, Tennessee, Michigan, Auburn, Ole Miss, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Michigan State, and many others. His commitment gives Notre Dame 22 pledges in the 2027 class.
The Chicago native is the second defensive standout from the Windy City to join the Irish, following elite defensive tackle David Folorunsho from St. Patrick High School. Notre Dame has prioritized re-establishing recruiting pipelines in Chicago, and Igwebuike represents a significant win in that effort.
Iowa Connection
Iowa fans will note Igwebuike held an offer from the Hawkeyes, who traditionally recruit the Chicago area heavily. The Hawkeyes have landed several Mount Carmel players in recent years, but Igwebuike opted for Notre Dame's combination of academic prestige and defensive tradition.
For Iowa, the loss is tempered by the fact that Igwebuike was always considered a Notre Dame lean. The Hawkeyes remain strong at linebacker with in-state talent and transfers, but missing on a top-150 national recruit from a key pipeline area is a reminder of the competitive recruiting landscape.
Rankings and Projections
Igwebuike is ranked No. 123 overall and No. 9 linebacker nationally by 247Sports composite. Rivals/On3 consensus ranks him No. 134 overall and No. 10 at his position. He is the highest-rated linebacker commit for Notre Dame in the 2027 cycle.
His commitment solidifies a strong defensive class for the Irish, who now have pledges from defensive linemen, defensive backs, and specialists. Igwebuike is expected to compete for early playing time given his size and skill set.
What This Means for Iowa Recruiting
Iowa's coaching staff will continue to target the Chicago area, which has produced several recent Hawkeye contributors. While Igwebuike chose Notre Dame, the Hawkeyes remain in contention for other Midwest linebackers in the 2027 class.
The Hawkeyes have a strong track record of developing linebackers into NFL prospects, and that tradition remains a selling point for recruits. Missing on a top target is not uncommon, and Iowa's program stability under Kirk Ferentz gives it staying power in recruiting battles.
