Dem Civil War Erupts Over Scandal-Plagued Senate Hopeful
Democrats are in a full-blown panic over their scandal-plagued Senate candidate in Maine, and the fallout could have major implications for Iowa voters this fall. With Graham Platner refusing to drop out despite deeply disturbing allegations, the Democratic Party's path to taking back the Senate is crumbling before their eyes.
Mounting Scandals Rock Maine Race
The New York Times dropped a bombshell report Thursday featuring disturbing accounts from Platner's ex-girlfriends. Just days before he is expected to win the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins, Platner faces allegations of physical abuse. One woman described him grabbing her hard enough to leave marks and locking her in a room. She also claimed Platner knew his tattoo resembled a Nazi symbol when he got it, contradicting his repeated denials.
This comes on the heels of last week's revelation that Platner sexted other women while married, and earlier scandals involving offensive Reddit posts. In those posts, he suggested sexual assault victims should take more responsibility and called white rural Americans stupid.
Hypocrisy and the Double Standard
The Democratic Party is now eating its own, but some prominent liberals are twisting themselves into knots to defend Platner. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) is still planning to campaign with him on Friday, arguing Platner has sought redemption. Some donors are brushing off the scandals entirely, pointing to what they call a double standard.
Several donors I know are still all-in for Platner because he's not Susan Collins and he's a Democrat. The line that keeps being thrown around is the double standard that exists between Republicans and Democrats, where if this was a Republican, they'd all be getting behind him.
However, other Democrats are sounding the alarm, warning that defending Platner makes them sound like the very Republicans they love to criticize.
Democrats in Maine and throughout the country have got to decide what is their priority: Justifying Graham Platner's behavior or winning the Democratic seat in Maine. It's very clear that Platner has not been able to credibly justify his conduct and Democrats who defend him sound like Republicans defending Donald Trump after the Access Hollywood tape.
The Senate Map and Iowa's Role
For Democrats, winning Maine is practically a requirement to take back the Senate. Collins is the only Republican senator up for reelection this year in a state carried by former Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024. If Platner tanks the Maine race, Democrats will be forced to win much redder states to get control of the upper chamber.
That means places like Iowa suddenly become must-win territory for the left, a daunting task in a state that has firmly rejected progressive policies in recent cycles. A senior Democratic Senate aide granted anonymity to speak candidly summed up the party's panic.
There is dramatically higher concern about losing Maine now across the caucus than there was before the stories broke. Everyone realizes that without Maine the path to taking back the Senate is impossible. Everyone is apoplectic.
Donors Grow Skittish as Platner Tanks
Even some wealthy donors who previously backed Platner are heading for the exits. One national donor adviser noted that Platner is now below the bar for their client group, redirecting funds to other battleground races. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who originally recruited Gov. Janet Mills to run before she suspended her campaign in April, has gone completely silent.
Still, some deep-pocketed liberals simply do not care about the allegations. A Democratic consultant close to major donors said the indifference stems from the Trump era, where allegations of wrongdoing simply do not weigh as heavily as they used to.
We don't care. I think that's the case for many donors. Anybody who beats Susan Collins will do.
Cheyenne Hunt, the leader of Gen Z For Change, rescinded her endorsement on Thursday, stating that women cannot be an acceptable sacrifice for the next election. However, Platner is still set to rally in Bar Harbor on Friday with Khanna and other Maine Democrats.
Platner Doubles Down
Platner went on MSNOW Thursday to deny the allegations of violence, claiming they come from someone who is politically motivated. He insisted he has not once considered dropping out.
My journey is one of transformation. And I'm very happy to talk about that earlier part in my life. And I have no doubt that people will attempt to continue to revisit Reddit posts, continue to try to revisit parts of my past. But I think what's really important to note here is that these are things that I talk about in my past, things that I am not proud of, but it is a past that I had to go through to get where I am today.
While Maine law allows the state party to replace Platner if he steps down before mid-July, such a move would be unprecedented. With Platner digging in and top Democrats remaining silent, the party's civil war is only just beginning.
