Iowa GOP Unites Behind Zach Lahn, Takes Aim at Rob Sand's Radical Ties
Republican leaders closed ranks Saturday at the Iowa GOP State Convention, rallying behind gubernatorial nominee Zach Lahn and warning Iowans that Democratic opponent Rob Sand is a radical backed by out-of-state elites. Lahn, who secured a narrow primary victory on June 2, now leads the party's push to keep the governor's office in Republican hands.
How Did Zach Lahn Win the GOP Nomination?
Lahn claimed the Republican nomination in a tightly contested primary on June 2, earning 38% of the vote. U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra finished close behind at 37.2%, with three other candidates splitting the remainder. The razor-thin margin of just 0.8 percentage points underscored the competitive nature of the race.
Feenstra, who represents Iowa's 4th Congressional District, entered the primary with high-profile endorsements from former Gov. Terry Branstad and President Donald Trump. As the more traditional candidate with established political experience, Feenstra was seen as the frontrunner against Lahn, who has never held political office.
President Trump addressed his endorsement Thursday, saying he was not given the full picture.
