Iowa Leaders Must Face Voters, Not Hide Behind Phone Calls
Iowa's elected officials are increasingly dodging in-person town halls, leaving voters without direct access to ask questions and hold their representatives accountable. While progressive activist groups have disrupted public meetings, avoiding constituents entirely violates Iowa's deep tradition of face-to-face accountability.
Why Are Iowa Republicans Dodging Public Town Halls?
Last year, the National Republican Congressional Committee advised its members to stop holding in-person town halls. This came after several lawmakers faced angry crowds organized to protest cuts to Medicaid and other programs. Unfortunately, many Iowa Republicans have followed that advice.
Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks held her first in-person town hall of the year only after facing months of protests across her district. Before that, she relied on telephone town halls. At a private event in April 2025, she even urged Republicans to dial in early so Democrats could not dominate the questions.
