New Baby Gnome and Children's Book Bring Big Summer Fun to Reiman Gardens
Reiman Gardens in Ames has a new star attraction: a four-foot-tall Baby Gnome with big blue eyes, bright yellow buttons, and a hat it still needs to grow into. Unveiled July 9 beside the iconic 15-foot Elwood — the World's Largest Concrete Gnome — the new figure is already drawing families and curious visitors to this beloved Iowa landmark.
What is the new Baby Gnome at Reiman Gardens?
The concrete Baby Gnome was revealed as part of Reiman Gardens' 2026 'Big and Small' theme, a season built around playful contrasts, oversized sculptures, and unexpected discoveries. The unveiling attracted longtime garden members, families, and onlookers eager to meet the newest resident.
Elwood has been a fixture at Reiman Gardens for more than 15 years, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors and becoming one of Iowa's most recognizable roadside landmarks. Now, he is sharing the spotlight with a tiny companion.
'The arrival of Baby Gnome perfectly captures the spirit of our Big and Small theme,' said Andrew Gogerty, marketing and communications manager at Reiman Gardens. 'Visitors have loved Elwood for years, and we're excited to give them another memorable reason to visit, laugh and create new family memories.'
How can visitors name the new gnome?
Reiman Gardens is hosting a 'Gname the Gnome' contest. Visitors can submit name ideas online or through a submission box near the front desk through July 31. Staff will select the winning name.
What else is happening at Reiman Gardens this summer?
Baby Gnome's arrival is part of a full summer lineup that includes the 'Big and Small' outdoor sculpture exhibition by Tork Collaborative Arts, the Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing, and ongoing family programming.
It also pairs with the debut of 'Adventures with Elwood the Gnome: Small Things,' a new children's picture book written by Gogerty and illustrated by Ames artist Tim Read. The 36-page softcover book celebrates friendship, belonging, and the joy found in everyday moments.
'This book is rooted in values — celebrating friendship, belonging, and the joy of discovering wonder in everyday moments,' Gogerty said.
The book is available for $20 at the Reiman Gardens Gift Shop.
