NRSC Warns GOP: Don't Sleep on Maine Senate Race
By Just The News Iowa Staff | June 11, 2026
Senate Republicans are sounding the alarm on the Maine Senate race, warning that scandal-plagued Democrat Graham Platner could unseat Sen. Susan Collins if the party doesn't act fast. With Iowa's own Senate seat among the battleground races this cycle, what happens in Maine could directly impact the balance of power in Washington.
Maine Is the Linchpin for Senate Control
The National Republican Senatorial Committee circulated a memo Wednesday calling Maine the linchpin of the 35 Senate seats up for grabs this year. Collins holds the only Republican-held Senate seat in a state won by Kamala Harris in 2024, making it the Democrats' most direct path to returning Chuck Schumer to the majority leader's office.
Republicans are already defending close races in Nebraska, Iowa, North Carolina, Ohio, and Texas, while trying to flip Georgia. Losing Maine could tip the entire chamber back to Democratic control, a scenario that would put Iowa's priorities on agriculture, energy independence, and parental rights at serious risk.
Platner's Scandals Haven't Slowed Democrats Down
Despite a Nazi tattoo, allegations of misogynist violence, bizarre behavior in port-a-johns, and a socialist policy platform, Platner remains a credible threat. The NRSC memo didn't mince words.
