From Lenox to Buffalo: Northern Iowa’s Spencer Brown Battles Injuries, Aims for Breakout Year
By John Damon | Just The News Iowa
Spencer Brown’s journey from a small-town Iowa farm to the NFL is a testament to hard work, resilience, and the grit that defines the Heartland. The Buffalo Bills right tackle, who grew up in Lenox (population 1,300) and played eight-man football at Lenox High School, is entering his sixth season with a clear goal: stay healthy and become the consistent force the Bills need.
Brown, a third-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft out of the University of Northern Iowa, has already checked off many personal milestones. He inked a four-year, $72 million extension in September 2024. He has protected quarterback Josh Allen and helped pave the way for 2025 NFL rushing champion James Cook III. But injuries have been a persistent obstacle.
How a small-town Iowa kid made it to the NFL
Brown’s path to professional football is almost unheard of. Lenox had never produced a Division I athlete before he walked on at Northern Iowa. He played five sports in high school — football, basketball, baseball, golf, and track — often to avoid extra farm chores. His senior season, he earned first-team all-state honors with 24 catches, seven touchdowns, and 17 sacks on defense.
“Work harder than everybody else: that is pretty much what my story is,” Brown told WROC News 8. “I was super tall, and I was decently athletic. But I got away with it in high school. And then luckily Coach Farley gave me a random offer, and I accepted it a day later without even seeing the campus.”
Former Northern Iowa head coach Mark Farley recalled the emotional moment Brown received his scholarship. “I told him, ‘You’ve got a scholarship to Northern Iowa,’ and his first comment was, ‘You mean a real scholarship?’ I get chills thinking about it,” Farley told ESPN.
Injury history: A long list of setbacks
Brown’s durability has been a concern since high school. He suffered an osteochondral defect under his left patella and a fractured left femur in 2015, both requiring surgery. The next year, he tore a meniscus. At Northern Iowa, he tore his right MCL and suffered patellar tendon damage in 2017.
In the NFL, Brown has appeared in 73 of 85 possible regular-season games. He underwent microdiscectomy back surgery in 2022 and started training camp on the PUP list last July due to a back flare-up. This offseason, he had minor knee surgery.
“I was doing things wrong. I was loading my back the way I shouldn’t have been — just wasn’t smart training on my behalf,” Brown admitted.
Maturity on and off the field
Early in his career, Brown developed a reputation for on-field antics, including taunting opponents and chugging beers from fans after touchdowns. He acknowledges that behavior was a product of youth and inexperience.
“I was making up for being less experienced. I was compensating,” he said. “But yeah, now I’m rolling. I’ll just see where the year takes me. I mean, I just laid into technique and playing better football, and worrying less about, ‘What am I going to say to this guy?’ Just let my play speak for itself.”
Brown’s parents, Kurt and Liz, weren’t fans of his earlier antics. He says he’s focused on growing up and being a better teammate.
What’s at stake for the Bills in 2026
With training camp opening July 28 at St. John Fisher University, Brown says he feels better than he has in two or three years. He has been training alongside rehabbing teammate Michael Hoecht.
“Day One: I’ll be out there,” Brown promised. “After last year, I’m going to stay in my own lane and listen to the people that are watching out for me and my health.”
Brown’s goals for 2026 are simple: consistency and staying on the field. He knows the Bills’ Super Bowl hopes depend on a healthy offensive line.
“There’s definitely still a lot of meat on the bone, a lot of stuff we can accomplish as a team,” he said. “Me, personally, it’s just about being consistent and being the best player I can be.”
